20 NOV 2024 · My run for the bus. 🚌 (appologies for the wind noise, the new wind sock was not very effective today!)
I started my morning with a plan for a long run before catching the bus to work, enjoying the fresh energy from my coffee and apple pie breakfast. The weather had been turbulent the night before, with cyclonic winds and relentless rain, but the morning turned out to be surprisingly pleasant. During the run, I picked up a sturdy fallen branch for firewood, admired the sunrise over San Juan Island, and spotted some deer crossing the road. I reflected on the challenges of biking in rain and icy conditions while noting my comfort zone for heart rate as a 73-year-old runner. By the end of the run, I reached the bus stop with 3.31 km logged and waited for the 26th bus to take me to work.

I’ve been using my e-bike and bow saw to collect and cut wood into manageable pieces, making the most of nearby beaches like Beaudous Cove. Earlier today, I slipped on mossy stairs, landing hard on my hip after finishing a morning of firewood collection. Despite the challenges, I recorded this episode of The Running Jackal Podcast, capturing the clean water, driftwood, and scenic surroundings. Wrapping up my walk, I’ll finish burning 600 calories while enjoying this peaceful environment before heading home.

15 NOV 2024 · I began my trail run at Douglas Creek, starting on the Irvine Trail, which leveled off a bit after a while. Seventeen minutes from home, I entered Zone Three, taking in the surroundings as I tested my new trail shoes on the wet rocks. Twenty-seven minutes from my fridge, I noticed my pace picking up as I greeted some dogs along the way, prioritizing them over their owners as they seemed to pose more of a threat. Reaching my highest point, I took a moment to hydrate and catch the "money shot" with the sun's rays illuminating the view. After thirty-two minutes, I began the descent down South Ridge Trail, ready to complete my journey as I put the camera away before any mishaps occurred.

13 NOV 2024 · I’m waiting for the 14 bus to take me to the University of Victoria (UVic) after finding out I wasn't really needed at work today. After some navigating, I board the bus and enjoy the route that passes the Johnson Street Bridge and Mount Tolmie. When I arrive at UVic, I look for and find the 12 bus, which I think of as the "neighborhood bus" since it takes me close to my destination. Along the way, I decide to take a photograph to capture this little adventure. I’ll need to edit this recording later, as there’s more bus noise than talking, so for now, I’m signing off until the weekend.

11 NOV 2024 · On Monday, November 11, I went for a trail run on my favourite trails, working to reach my calorie burn goal for the day. My pace hovered around nine minutes per kilometre, with walk breaks on the inclines, I recorded some of my thoughts and sights along the way. I ran into a few people, passed several dogs, and stopped to take photos with my point-and-shoot camera. The trails were wet and muddy, with some challenging terrain, but I managed to stay on course, avoiding getting lost. Near the end of the run, I took a moment to remember those who served, observing Remembrance Day, before wrapping up the recording.

I was running to catch the bus to work, using the journey as a way to get some exercise and enjoy the morning. Passing through Lambrick Park and other familiar spots, I reflected on the recent windstorm, which had caused power outages and could lead to food spoilage issues at work. Along the way, I encountered other runners, pedestrians, and glimpses of local life as I headed toward the bus terminus. I took a few photos to capture the moment and arrived at the bus station just as other buses were coming and going, marking the end of my morning run.

Today, I’m headed to Borden Mercantile to buy some wheat for brewing a pale wheat beer. I’ve already got the hops and barley, but I’ll be sneaky because they don’t usually sell grains for human consumption. My run is around 4 kilometers, and my pace is improving on the downhill despite the wet shoes. Now, I’m nearing the mercantile and wrapping up the run – thanks for joining me in the rain!

I also shared stories about my friends' races and my own experiences, comparing results and musing on age differences. Throughout the run, I kept an eye on my heart rate zones and took moments to enjoy the beautiful, overcast Victoria scenery. By the end, I felt thankful for the ability to run in such a stunning part of the world.
