Powerful Radio Signal From Deep Space Appears to Be Repeating in a 16-Day Cycle
Link: https://www.sciencealert.com/periodicity-has-been-detected-in-a-repeating-fast-radio-burst

One of the defining characteristics of the mysterious deep-space signals we call fast radio bursts is that they are unpredictable. They belch out across the cosmos without rhyme or reason, with no discernible pattern, making them incredibly hard to study.

Now, for the first time, astronomers have found a fast radio burst (FRB) that repeats on a regular cycle.

Every 16.35 days, the signal named FRB 180916.J0158+65 follows a similar pattern. For four days, it will spit out a burst or two every hour. Then it falls silent for 12 days. Then the whole thing repeats.

Astronomers with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) Collaboration in Canada observed this cycle for a total of 409 days.

We don't yet know what it means; but it could be another piece in the complicated conundrum of FRBs.

To recap, FRBs are hugely energetic flares of radiation in the radio spectrum that last just a few milliseconds at most. In that timeframe, they can discharge as much power as hundreds of millions of Suns.

FRB 180916.J0158+65 is one of the handful of FRBs that have been traced back to a galaxy. It's on the outskirts of a spiral galaxy 500 million light-years away, in a star-forming region. This means a supermassive black hole is unlikely, but a stellar-mass black hole is possible.

What Scientists Can Learn From Alien Hunters
Link: https://www.wired.com/story/what-scientists-can-learn-from-alien-hunters/

Aliens—hypothetical beings from outer space—fall into roughly three categories. They could be far-away microbes or other creatures that don’t use technology humans can detect; they could be far-away creatures that use technology earthlings can identify; or they could be creatures that have used technology to come to Earth.

When a topic, like UFOs, is shoved outside polite scientific society, researchers don’t always treat it with as much rigor as they demand of their own work. Ufology “is not simply rejected as a legitimate discipline, it is categorically dismissed,” writes psychologist Stuart Appelle, in a chapter called “Ufology and Academia: The UFO Phenomenon as a Scholarly Discipline,” for a 2000 book published by University of Kansas. “There is a critical difference. Rejection suggests a conclusion based on close examination and careful reflection. Dismissal is an a priori judgment that close examination is not warranted.” Which is not very scientific.

Don’t just ignore all the outliers as outliers, in other words: Important truth, if not whole truth, can lurk inside of them too. And in many cases, those are someone’s truths. When “official” people listen to them, those formerly beyond the boundary may start to consider expert analysis more—rather than dismissing it as they were dismissed—even when that analysis says the alien mothership was actually just another drone.
