Story Transcript:

Ja: ヒロシの住むこの街、東京、はどこよりも速い。
En: Hiroshi lived in this city, Tokyo, which was faster than anywhere else.

Ja: 毎日、午前7時に目覚め、繁華街を抜け、駅まで急ぎ足で向かう。
En: Every day, he would wake up at 7 a.m., rush through the busy streets, and head to the station in a hurried pace.

Ja: そのきっかけはもちろん、通勤ラッシュ。
En: The reason for this, of course, was the morning commute rush.

Ja: だが、この日は何もかもがいつもと違った。
En: However, this day was different from everything else.

Ja: 朝のうっとうしいブザー音と同時に、ヒロシは起きた。
En: As the annoying buzz of the morning alarm sounded, Hiroshi woke up.

Ja: マンションから一目散に駅へ走り、通らなければならない五つの交差点を通過した。
En: He sprinted to the station from his apartment building, passing through five intersections that he had to cross.

Ja: しかし、目の前に広がる光景は、見慣れたものでありながら、不吉な予感を抱かせるものだった。
En: However, the scene that stretched out in front of him was familiar yet unsettling.

Ja: 朝の大勢の通勤客がひしめく駅のホームには、つまずくほどの人々が満ちていた。
En: The platform at the crowded station, hustling with commuters in the morning, was filled with people to the point of stumbling.

Ja: ヒロシは腕時計を見る。
En: Hiroshi checked his watch.

Ja: まだ間に合う時間だ。
En: He still had time.

En: He waited for that train to slide into the station, the one he would be late if he missed, accompanied by its familiar warning sound.

En: Ah, the usual morning commute scene.

Ja: だが、この日は違う。
En: But this day was different.

Ja: 今日、ヒロシはそれを知ることになる。
En: Hiroshi would come to know that today.

Ja: ドアが開き、人々が一斉に車両内に押し込まれる。
En: The doors opened, and people pushed into the train car all at once.

Ja: 耳元には遠くでこだまする怒鳴声と携帯電話の通知音が響く。
En: Distant shouts and ring tones of cellphones resounded in his ears.

Ja: ヒロシは何とか電車に乗り込み、体を売り切れそうな方向に張り付けた。
En: Hiroshi managed to get onto the train somehow and pressed himself against the seemingly sold-out space.

Ja: ある定型的な手順を踏み、コートのポケットから定期入れを取り出す。
En: Following a routine procedure, he took out his pass case from his coat pocket.

Ja: そして、それが起こった。
En: And then, it happened.

Ja: 不意に、電車が急停車。
En: Suddenly, the train jerked to a halt.

Ja: 周りの人々からは驚きの声が上がるが、問題はそこではない。
En: Voices of surprise rose from the surrounding people, but that was not the problem.

Ja: ヒロシの手から定期入れが落ち、足元を転がり、足元から離れて行ってしまった。
En: Hiroshi's pass case slipped from his hand, rolled near his feet, and drifted away from him.

Ja: そして、それは電車の操作パネルに当たり、警告音が鳴った。
En: And then, it hit the control panel of the train, and a warning sound rang out.

En: The scene that unfolded before Hiroshi, caught in a panic, was a chaos of buttons bathed in red, orange, and green lights.

Ja: 恐怖と混乱に襲われたヒロシは、思考が止まり、慌てて手を伸ばし、全てのボタンを押してしまった。
En: Overwhelmed by fear and confusion, Hiroshi's thoughts ceased, and he reached out in a hurried manner, pushing all the buttons.

Ja: 掌がボタンに触れると、各種アラーム音が奏でられた。
En: As his palm touched the buttons, various alarm sounds were played.

Ja: 全てのボタンを押してしまった結果、電車は立ち往生し、ヒロシと他の乗客たちは無言でシーンを見つめるしかなかった。
En: As a result of pushing all the buttons, the train came to a standstill, and Hiroshi and the other passengers could do nothing but silently witness the scene.
