When traumatic historical markers are conjured for comparison with current events, and all for political reasons, there is a serious threat emerging. Celebrities and establishment drones on mainstream news are calling for violence if Democrats do not win big in mid-term elections, some even going further by threatening a Civil War. This was codified by MSNBC when they compared Joe Biden’s divisive hate-filled speech to Abraham Lincoln before the American Civil War. The only problem with this term, however, is that the ‘war’ was really not ‘civil’, i.e., citizens engaged in conflict against each other. What we call the Civil War was actually a “Civil Insurrection” propagated by Confederates, Secessionists, Nullifiers, and pro-slavery elements against the Federal Government. Now that the same ideological zealots have power today they are invoking the past to justify their excesses, explicitly telling the entire country that if you do not agree with their views then you are an extremist and desire to overthrow representative government. This is the ‘unconstrained vision’ of Thomas Sowell: liberals are always good and if you disagree then you are a very bad person who must be dealt with.
