Story Transcript:

Hu: A nap sugarai átsütöttek a Budapest Nagycsarnok színes üvegablakain, ahogy János belépett.
En: The sun's rays shone through the colorful stained-glass windows of Budapest's Great Market Hall as János entered.

Hu: Kezében egy lista volt, amit nagymamája adott neki.
En: In his hand was a list given to him by his grandmother.

Hu: "Kedvenc fűszereink kellenek, Jancsikám," mondta neki reggel.
En: "We need our favorite spices, Jancsikám," she had told him that morning.

Hu: János körülnézett a zajos piacon.
En: János looked around the noisy market.

Hu: Bódék egymás után kínálták portékáikat.
En: Booths lined up offering their wares.

Hu: Friss gyümölcsök, zöldségek és fűszerek illata keveredett a levegőben.
En: The scent of fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices mingled in the air.

Hu: Egy paprikaárushoz lépett.
En: He approached a pepper vendor.

Hu: "Jó napot!
En: "Good day!"

Hu: " mondta János udvariasan.
En: János said politely.

Hu: "Szép napot!
En: "Good day to you!"

Hu: " válaszolta az árus, egy mosolygós néni.
En: replied the vendor, a smiling elderly lady.

Hu: "Mit óhajt, kedves uram?
En: "What would you like, dear sir?"

Hu: ""Paprikát szeretnék venni," mondta János.
En: "I'd like to buy some paprika," János said.

Hu: "De kicsit drága.
En: "But it's a bit expensive.

Hu: Tudnánk alkudni?
En: Could we haggle?"

Hu: " Az árus szeme felcsillant.
En: The vendor's eyes lit up.

Hu: "Bizony próbáljuk meg," felelte.
En: "Let's give it a try," she answered.

Hu: János elővette azokat a közmondásokat, amelyeket nagymamája tanított neki.
En: János pulled out the proverbs his grandmother had taught him.

Hu: "Nincs rosz kenyér, csak kevés fog," kezdte.
En: "There's no bad bread, only few teeth," he started.

Hu: Az árus felnevetett.
En: The vendor laughed.

Hu: "Ez szép," mondta.
En: "That's nice," she said.

Hu: "De mit akar vele mondani?
En: "But what do you mean by that?"

Hu: ""Értem én a tréfát, de nem szeretem," válaszolta János.
En: "I understand humor, but I don't really like it," János replied.

Hu: "Tudna egy kis árat csökkenteni?
En: "Could you lower the price a bit?"

Hu: ""Talán, ha valami szórakoztatót mond még," mosolygott az asszony.
En: "Maybe, if you tell me something entertaining," smiled the woman.

Hu: "Semmi sem drága legénynek," próbálkozott János.
En: "Nothing is too expensive for a brave man," János tried.

Hu: "De a bors is borsos.
En: "But pepper is pricey."

Hu: "Az árus kacagott.
En: The vendor chuckled.

Hu: "Nem rossz!
En: "Not bad!

Hu: Még egyet!
En: One more!"

Hu: "János izzadt, de nem adta fel.
En: János was sweating, but he didn't give up.

Hu: "Jobb egy lúdnyak sok varjúnál.
En: "One goose neck is better than many crows."

Hu: ""Jó, jó," bókolt az asszony.
En: "Good, good," the woman complimented.

Hu: "Na még egy utolsót!
En: "Now, one last one!"

Hu: "A paprikás néni arca ragyogott, János pedig mély levegőt vett.
En: The pepper vendor's face was beaming, and János took a deep breath.

Hu: "Aki mer, az nyer, de aki nem mer, az nem is ehet.
En: "He who dares, wins, but he who doesn't dare, doesn't even eat."

Hu: "Az asszony most nevetett legjobban.
En: The woman laughed the hardest at this.

Hu: "Na, gyere velem vacsorázni, fiatalember!
En: "Come have dinner with me, young man!"

Hu: "Ekkor János hirtelen megértette, mit mondott.
En: At that moment, János suddenly understood what he had said.

Hu: "Nem, nem vacsora," hebegte.
En: "No, not dinner," he stammered.

Hu: "Én a nagymamámhoz akartam elhívni!
En: "I wanted to invite you to my grandma's place!"

Hu: "Az asszony még mindig mosolygott, és barátságosan megveregette János vállát.
En: The woman was still smiling and patted János kindly on the shoulder.

Hu: "Jancsikám, te egy igazán színes egyéniség vagy.
En: "Jancsikám, you are a truly colorful character.

Hu: Neked adom ezeket a paprikákat, kedvezménnyel.
En: I'll give you these peppers at a discount.

Hu: És köszönd meg a nagymamádnak a jó nevelést!
En: And thank your grandmother for raising you so well!"

Hu: "János vörös fejjel, de boldogan vette át a paprikákat.
En: With a red face but a joyful heart, János took the peppers.

Hu: "Nagyon köszönöm!
En: "Thank you very much!"

Hu: " mondta.
En: he said.

Hu: Amikor hazaérkezett, elmesélte a történetet a nagymamájának, aki jót nevetett.
En: When he got home, he recounted the story to his grandmother, who laughed heartily.

Hu: "Látod, Jancsikám," mondta nagymamája, "sosem tudhatod, mi lesz egy kis alku vége.
En: "You see, Jancsikám," his grandmother said, "you never know where a bit of haggling will lead."

Hu: "A nap végén János rájött, hogy az emberek kedvessége és a jókedv fontosabb, mint a pénz.
En: At the end of the day, János realized that people's kindness and good humor are more important than money.

Hu: És a paprika?
En: And the paprika?

Hu: Az tökéletes volt a vacsorához.
En: It was perfect for dinner.
