Do you trust your body to tell you when it’s full or hungry? Do you even know how to listen to your body when it comes to choosing what and how much to eat?
I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a complicated history with food. This conversation with Kourtney Johnson helped me realize that I have not been trusting my body at all when it comes to eating, and that many times I have actually tried to force myself to do something that I know isn’t best for my body.
And I’ve suffered health consequences because of it. I got to my “goal weight” by dieting only to lose my periods, an important sign of health! Not to mention the consequences to my mental health that resulted with becoming overly obsessed with tracking and measuring my food.
Intuitive eating is about tuning into your body, while still taking into account rational thought. It’s much more focused on changing your mindset about food and eating and nutrition than it is about focusing on the actual foods to eat.
What if it is possible to be healthy in a body that doesn’t fit the conventional “healthy” definition? Kourtney Johnson, dietician, nutrition coach, and owner of Intuitively Nourished, helps us see how that can be true.
Take-aways:
-Intuitive eating is using your body’s own internal cues to make decisions about what, when, and how much to eat
-You can trust your body
-Part of intuitive eating is taking rational thought into account
-Intuitive eating helps us change our thoughts about food so we see all foods as neutral
-Sometimes you have to mourn a certain body image (“the thin ideal”) you had for your body
