So what is mindfulness, really? That was my question for my podcast guest this week. I don’t know about you, but I feel like thoughts are constantly streaming through my head. I felt like mindfulness was only for those people who can sit around and meditate or who are really amazing at yoga. What Lisa taught me, however, was mindfulness is not about getting rid of your thoughts, but being aware of them.
Lisa Nezneski is a pharmacist and the author of “Seven Mindful Questions.” In this podcast interview, she explains how to use the questions to become more present for what is happening in your life, stop wasting time, and
focus on what matters. She also shares practical strategies for starting to become more aware of our thoughts, including reviewing a few different breathing techniques.
One of the Seven Mindful Questions Lisa Nezneski encourages us to ask is, “why am I doing this?” I had to ask her, what if you ask yourself this question and you realize you don’t have a good reason for doing something -OR- you don’t like the reason you’re doing something? How do you reconcile that? Lisa reminded me that this information, even though it can feel bad or uncomfortable, is actually good information, because then you can use it to make a change. Lisa says, “asking WHY gives you a deeper level of awareness.”
“When we start paying attention to our heart, we choose what matters to us” - How often are we running on auto-pilot instead of stopping and paying attention to our hearts? How often do we choose what is familiar without even thinking about it instead of choosing what is reflective of our highest priorities? I know I can’t be the only one who has been guilty of this!
Here are the take-aways from this episode:
-Mindfulness means being present - body, mind, and spirit
-The Seven Mindful Questions are designed to bring you into the moment: Aware, Because, Care, *pause and breathe*, Choose, Better Alternative
-When we start paying attention to our heart, we choose what matters to us
-Mindfulness doesn’t need to be an elaborate process
-Check in with yourself before your feet hit the floor
-Asking WHY gives you a deeper level of awareness
