Take-aways:
-The Church’s teaching is based on a Biblical foundation. There are Bible passages about procreation, unity in marriage, and how manipulating one’s fertility is wrong
-Until the 1930s, the Catholic Church was not alone in its opposition to contraceptives and leaders of the Protestant reformation spoke out against contraception
-Evangelical discernment is used to decide the teachings of the Catholic Church. This means prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit, and committing to truth even when it is contrary to popular opinion
-The marital act is a good thing. It is good for couples to find joy and pleasure in it
-Fertility is a gift
-The Church emphasizes that the purposes of the marriage act is unity and procreation
-Husband and wife need to depend upon each other and God’s love for them in marriage
-A family must remain open to the possibility of new life, even if spacing their children
-The Church teaching is not practical without the help of God
-Sexuality reflects the human person’s innermost being. How we love and express our sexuality is both physical and spiritual.
-It is up to each one of us to use our own conscience, one that is based on Scripture and (for Catholics) the Church’s teachings
