Ports in countries like Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands have become key entry points for cocaine shipments. The cartels have utilized various methods, including concealing drugs in shipping containers and collaborating with corrupt port workers and customs officials to ensure safe passage. For instance, Spanish authorities have uncovered extensive corruption among port workers who assist in the smuggling operations​.

Additionally, Mexican cartels have adapted to local conditions by setting up drug processing operations in Europe. This includes transporting coca base and processing it into high-quality cocaine within European countries like the Netherlands and Belgium. This strategy not only increases the potency and value of the cocaine but also helps the cartels evade detection during transportation.

The cartels' influence is spreading beyond traditional strongholds, with Germany, France, Italy, and the UK emerging as new focal points for their activities. This expansion has brought increased violence and corruption, mirroring the challenges faced in other parts of the world where these cartels operate​.

As the cocaine trade continues to evolve and the suppliers expand their theater of operations, Europe is increasingly becoming a hub for major cocaine trafficking.
