In this series, we bring you the story of the Carny Cult & subculture of a carny. In 1991 a carnival worker named William Ault was excited to discover that several other carnies were involved in some fringe pseudo Satanic cult. Ault wanted badly to be a member, but ended up getting dismembered. Before we can really do that elbow deep dive into this strange-but-true-crime tale, we have to do an examination of carnivals in regards to their place in society as a whole and how they are defined within the confines and constraints of their status as a distinct subculture. And we have to explore what characteristics define subcultures in part one of this series.
