We discovered that the very presence of Yahweh acts as an unshakeable, fortified stronghold for those who walk in integrity, while that exact same presence brings utter destruction to the wicked! Today, as we step forward onto Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Seventy-Eight of our ongoing journey, we cross the threshold into Proverbs chapter eleven, exploring the first eleven verses. In this profound passage, King Solomon takes the foundational truths we have been learning and applies them directly to the marketplace, the courtroom, and the city square! He reveals how God views our business transactions, the inevitable dead-end of selfish ambition, and the incredible, uplifting impact that righteous citizens have on an entire community. Over my seventy years of navigating life, and my fifty years of studying the deep wisdom of the Scriptures, I have learned that genuine faith is never confined to a private, spiritual bubble. True biblical wisdom rolls up its sleeves and transforms how we handle our money, how we treat our neighbors, and how we build our cities!<#0.5#> Let us open our minds to the opening verses of our passage, observing how Solomon vividly paraphrases the economic and spiritual realities in Proverbs chapter eleven, verse one, and verse two. He begins by declaring that the Lord absolutely detests the use of dishonest scales, but takes immense delight when weights are perfectly accurate! Immediately following this, he warns that arrogant pride is a direct path to public disgrace, whereas true wisdom makes its home with the humble.<#0.5#> Look at the seamless, unbreakable connection between the marketplace and the divine realm! In the ancient Near Eastern markets, merchants used balancing scales and stone weights to measure out grain, silver, and precious spices. A corrupt merchant would hollow out his weights or use two completely different sets of stones—a heavier set for buying, and a lighter set for selling—quietly skimming a fraudulent profit from unsuspecting travelers. But Solomon reminds us, through the clear lens of the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview, that Yahweh, the Supreme Judge of the universe, is intimately watching every single transaction! He detests rigged scales! To cheat your neighbor is not just a clever business tactic; it is an abomination, a direct, offensive assault on the cosmic order established by the Creator. <#0.5#> Yet, when you operate with absolute, meticulous honesty—when your weights and measures are perfectly accurate—God actually takes delight in your daily business! And this economic integrity stems entirely from the posture of your heart, as verse two explains. The merchant who cheats does so out of arrogant pride, foolishly believing he is clever enough to outsmart both God and his neighbor, which eventually leads to his utter disgrace. But the humble person recognizes that they are subject to the King of heaven! That humility organically produces the divine wisdom needed to build a lasting, honorable legacy, free from the paranoia of being caught in a lie.<#0.5#> Solomon then expands on this theme of integrity acting as a navigational guide, weaving together the contiguous thoughts from Proverbs chapter eleven, verse three, through verse six. He tells us that good, upright people are actively guided by their own honesty, while treacherous, deceitful individuals are ultimately destroyed by their own dishonesty! He issues a stark, terrifying reminder that earthly riches will be entirely useless on the day of judgment, but living rightly can literally rescue you from death. The godly, he explains, are directed along a straight and level path by their honesty, but the wicked collapse under the crushing, suffocating load of their own sin. Ultimately, the godliness of good people rescues them, while the selfish ambition of the treacherous catches them tightly in a trap of their own making!<#0.5#> Listen to the brilliant, navigational power of integrity! In my decades of business management, I have counseled countless leaders who were desperately searching for a complicated, secret roadmap to success. But Solomon says your roadmap is simply your honesty! When you consistently refuse to cut corners, and when you tell the absolute truth even when it costs you money, that integrity acts as a blazing compass, guiding you safely through the treacherous, foggy terrain of life! But look at the tragic fate of the deceptive! They are caught in their own trap. Their selfish ambition and their dishonest schemes become the very load of sin that crushes them.<#0.5#> Furthermore, Solomon shatters the universal illusion of wealth. In the ancient world, just as in our modern world today, people falsely believe that enough money can buy them out of any consequence! But on the cosmic day of judgment, when every traveler stands exposed before the heavenly assembly, your massive bank account will be completely irrelevant! The only currency that holds any value in eternity is tzedaqah—right living, justice, and covenant loyalty. That righteous living is the only thing that will save you from the abyss of death!<#0.5#> The stark contrast between these two destinies is brought to a sharp, sobering point in Proverbs chapter eleven, verse seven, and verse eight. Solomon observes that when a wicked person takes their final breath, all of their hopes instantly die with them, because they relied entirely on their own feeble, earthly strength! In beautiful, miraculous contrast, the godly are rescued from the midst of deep trouble, and the disaster falls directly upon the heads of the wicked instead.<#0.5#> What a devastating, realistic picture of a life lived without God! The wicked person spends decades frantically building their own little kingdom, trusting solely in their intellect, their stock portfolio, and their political connections. But because they refuse to anchor their lives to the eternal Creator, their strength is ultimately feeble and fragile! When they descend into the grave—the dark, silent realm of Sheol—every single hope, dream, and expectation they ever had evaporates into nothingness. They leave absolutely no enduring legacy! But the godly experience the miraculous, intervening rescue of Yahweh! God actively engineers circumstances so that the righteous are pulled out of the blazing fire, while the trouble they were facing ricochets back onto the treacherous people who initiated it. God’s justice is perfect, and His protection over His covenant people is absolute!<#0.5#> Finally, Solomon transitions from individual destinies to the massive, communal impact of our character, linking together the powerful thoughts in Proverbs chapter eleven, verse nine, verse ten, and verse eleven. He reveals that the godless use their words as weapons to destroy their friends, but the righteous are rescued by the power of true knowledge! Because of this, the entire city breaks out into a massive celebration when the godly succeed, and the crowds literally shout for joy when the wicked finally perish! Upright, honest citizens are an incredible blessing to a city, making it prosper and flourish, but the destructive, perverse talk of the wicked tears the community apart.<#0.5#> Think about the immense power of your words and your character! In verse nine, we see the godless acting as agents of chaos. They use gossip, slander, and deceit to actively tear down the reputations of their closest friends. But the righteous use the deep, structural knowledge of God to rescue and rebuild their neighbors! This leads to the spectacular, joyous reality of verse ten and verse eleven! Have you ever wondered what kind of impact your life is having on your local community? When a righteous, humble, generous person succeeds in business or attains a high position of leadership, the entire city breathes a collective sigh of relief! The community celebrates because they know that an upright citizen will use their resources to bless the vulnerable, build up the infrastructure, and ensure that justice is administered fairly at the city gates. The righteous literally make the city prosper!<#0.5#> But when a wicked, corrupt, manipulative tyrant is finally removed from power, the city does not mourn; they throw a parade! They shout for joy because the heavy, suffocating blanket of oppression and dishonesty has finally been lifted! The destructive, divisive talk of the wicked actively tears the social fabric of a city to shreds, setting neighbors against one another in bitter conflict. But the godly are the healing glue that...

We saw that while the fierce storms of life whirl the wicked away into oblivion, the godly stand firm upon an everlasting foundation! Today, as we step forward onto Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Seventy-Seven of our ongoing trek through God’s Word, we arrive at the grand conclusion of Proverbs chapter ten, focusing on verse twenty-six through verse thirty-two. In these seven closing verses, King Solomon delivers an unforgettable warning about the irritating agony of laziness, pulls back the veil to reveal the cosmic security of those walking in covenant integrity, and anchors our speech in words that sprout with divine life. Having spent over fifty years studying Biblical wisdom, and having accumulated seventy years of life experiences, I have learned that everyday character—how diligently you work, where you run for refuge, and what kind of words flow from your mouth—is never trivial. Every single choice aligns you either with the life-giving order of the Creator, or with the self-destructive chaos of rebellion.<#0.5#> Let us open our minds and hearts to the first, highly sensory proverb of our passage, found in Proverbs chapter ten, verse twenty-six, where Solomon captures the raw frustration of dealing with a lazy worker. He paints a picture so vivid that you can almost taste it and feel it! He tells us that just as sour vinegar sets the teeth on edge, and just as acrid smoke stings and blinds the eyes, so is a lazy person to the employer who sends them on a mission.<#0.5#> Look at the extraordinary, visceral metaphors Solomon uses here! He does not merely state that slothfulness is inconvenient; he makes us physically cringe at its reality. Think about the piercing sensation of taking an unexpected mouthful of sour vinegar. When a sluggard hits the snooze button, procrastinates, cuts corners, or makes endless excuses, they paralyze the entire operation. This connects us directly back to our study in Proverbs chapter six, where Solomon commanded the lazybones to study the diligent ant, warning that folding the hands in extra slumber invites poverty like an armed bandit! In my decades of business and leadership, I have seen gifted people forfeit their reputations, not from a lack of talent, but because their unreliability made them like stinging smoke in the eyes of everyone trying to lead them. True, godly character means dependable, prompt diligence!<#0.5#> Solomon now transitions from the workplace into the grand, cosmic theater of divine justice, weaving together the profound thoughts found in Proverbs chapter ten, verse twenty-seven, verse twenty-eight, verse twenty-nine, and verse thirty.<#0.5#> In verse twenty-seven and verse twenty-eight, Solomon contrasts the long-term horizons of the godly and the rebellious. He reminds us that living in deep, reverent awe of the Lord lengthens a person's days, while the years of the wicked are cut tragically short. Furthermore, the earnest hopes of the righteous ultimately blossom into joyful celebration, whereas the selfish expectations of the wicked dissolve into absolute nothingness.<#0.5#> What a majestic sequence of cosmic realities! This echoes the foundational truth we explored back in Proverbs chapter one, verse seven, and repeated in chapter nine, verse ten: the fear of the Lord is the beginning and bedrock of all wisdom! Living with holy reverence for Yahweh naturally preserves your physical health, steers you clear of reckless violence, and lengthens your days on this earth. But the wicked, driven by arrogant defiance, rush headlong into traps that cut their lives short! Moreover, look at the emotional horizon Solomon describes. The righteous anchor their hopes to God's eternal character, which guarantees that their journey culminates in deep gladness. But the wicked, who spend their lives scheming for autonomous power and tainted wealth, will watch their dreams evaporate into thin air, leaving them completely empty-handed.<#0.5#> Solomon then elevates this truth to an astonishing theological height in verse twenty-nine, declaring that the way of the Lord serves as an impregnable stronghold for those who walk in integrity, while that exact same way brings utter ruin and destruction to evildoers!<#0.5#> To fully comprehend the depth of this statement, we must view it through the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. Yahweh is the supreme King who sits enthroned above the celestial assembly, governing creation according to perfect righteousness and holy order. "The way of the Lord"—His cosmic design, His moral standards, and His very presence—is not a passive suggestion; it is an active, unstoppable force in the universe! For the person who walks in integrity—the Hebrew concept of wholeness, blamelessness, and single-minded loyalty—the presence of Yahweh is a fortified mountain fortress, an unshakeable high tower where they are shielded from the storms of life!<#0.5#> Yet, that exact same holy presence operates as terrifying destruction to those who practice evil! It is like the sun: the very same solar rays that soften wax will bake clay rock-hard. It is like the glorious pillar of fire in the Exodus, which illuminated the camp of Israel with warmth and protection, but cast the Egyptian army into total panic and defeat! When a person fights against the moral architecture of the Creator, they do not break His laws; they simply break themselves against those laws.<#0.5#> This naturally leads to the permanence of our inheritance in verse thirty, where Solomon proclaims that the righteous will never be uprooted or shaken, while the wicked will not be allowed to remain in the land.<#0.5#> In the ancient Israelite mind, "the land" was far more than physical dirt; it was the sacred, covenantal space where God dwelt with His people! It represented rest, security, and eternal participation in the blessings of the divine realm. To be removed from the land was the ultimate tragedy of cosmic exile—to be uprooted and cast into the chaotic wilderness. But the godly, Solomon promises, will never be disturbed! They will not be dislodged or tossed aside. Because their roots are wrapped firmly around the bedrock of Yahweh's character, their living legacy endures through every earthly upheaval!<#0.5#> Finally, Solomon brings chapter ten to a powerful, practical climax by returning directly to the supreme instrument of human influence: the words of our mouths! Let us examine the interconnected thoughts in Proverbs chapter ten, verse thirty-one, and verse thirty-two.<#0.5#> In these final two verses, Solomon observes that the mouth of the godly person brings forth a rich harvest of wisdom, while the tongue that speaks deceit will be violently cut off. The claim is not usually that LDS exaltation is identical to historic theosis, but that Christianity once held a more expansive view of human glorification that was later diminished or obscured, and that Joseph Smith restored it. That appeal makes the King Follett Discourse a critical point of evaluation, because it is one of the clearest moments where Smith articulates his understanding of God, humanity, and exaltation in explicit metaphysical terms. If continuity exists, it must survive comparison at that level rather than at the level of shared vocabulary.<#0.5#> Christianity has always taught glorification. The disagreement is not over whether humanity is destined for glory, but over what kind of glory Scripture actually describes and whether that destiny preserves the Creator–creature distinction that historic theosis consistently maintains.<#0.5#> Segment one: What Biblical Theosis Is and Is Not.<#0.5#> Biblical theosis is not the absorption of humanity into God or the elevation of humans into deity. It is participation in God’s life by grace while remaining eternally a creature. The New Testament speaks freely of union, transformation, and inheritance, yet it never treats these realities as a collapse of being. God remains uncreated, self-existent, and sovereign, while redeemed humanity remains created, dependent, and upheld by God’s will.<#0.5#> When Peter speaks of believers becoming partakers of the divine nature, he does so in the context of moral transformation and escape from corruption through God’s promises, not the acquisition of deity. Paul frames glorification as adoption and inheritance received through Christ, not promotion into divine status. Jesus prays for a real and intimate unity between God and His people, but that unity is modeled on obedience, love, and shared holiness rather than ontological leveling. Even Revelation, which presents the saints reigning with Christ, preserves Christ as the unique Lord who is enthroned, worshiped, and unrivaled.<#0.5#> Historic Christian theology, including the strongest Eastern formulations of theosis, preserves this boundary with care. Union does not erase distinction. Participation does not become identity. Theosis magnifies God precisely because it preserves worship, grounding intimacy in grace rather than metaphysical equality.<#0.5#> Segment two: What the King Follett Discourse Actually Claims.<#0.5#> The King Follett Discourse moves in a different direction. In that sermon, Joseph Smith teaches that God the Father was once as humans are and progressed to godhood, and he presents human exaltation as the possibility of becoming as God is. This is not merely an affirmation that humans will be glorified, made holy, or brought into communion with God. It is a claim about God’s own past and about the attainability of godhood itself. God is no longer described as eternally uncreated, but as a being who advanced within an existing order of reality.<#0.5#> The discourse also asserts that the human soul or intelligence cannot be destroyed. This is not framed simply as a statement about God’s mercy or moral restraint, but as a claim about the nature of the soul itself. The implication is that even God does not possess the authority to annihilate it. At that point, the biblical framework of contingency begins to unravel. If the soul is metaphysically indestructible, then created existence is no longer entirely dependent on God’s sustaining will, and a form of inherent permanence is placed within the creature that is not presented as a gift granted by God.<#0.5#> Segment three: Indestructibility and the Loss of Creaturely Dependence.<#0.5#> Scripture consistently presents a different account of reality. God alone has life in Himself. All other life is derived, sustained, and upheld by Him. Immortality is something humans seek and receive through Christ, not something they possess by nature. Resurrection is an act of God, not the inevitable continuation of an indestructible soul. When everlasting life is promised, it is promised as a gift, grounded in union with Christ, not as a metaphysical guarantee independent of God’s will.<#0.5#> Once the soul is treated as indestructible by nature, exaltation inevitably shifts from grace to progression. Glorification ceases to be God’s act toward dependent creatures and becomes advancement within a system where beings already possess eternal status in some form. Theosis speaks the language of gift, communion, and transformation. Eternal progression, as articulated in the King Follett Discourse, speaks the language of ascent, development, and attainment.<#0.5#> Segment Four: Eden Revisited.<#0.5#> Genesis 3 is not simply about forbidden knowledge. It is about unauthorized ascent and the rejection of dependence. The serpent promises godlikeness without obedience, knowledge without submission, and life without the finality of death. “You will be like God” and “you will not die” are not incidental phrases. They define the temptation.<#0.5#> When godhood is presented as attainable within the same category as God’s own status, and when death is reframed so that the creature’s existence is never truly at stake, the structure of that temptation returns, even if the vocabulary is theological rather than mythic. The King Follett Discourse does not quote the serpent, but it echoes the same logic.<#0.5#> Segment five: Christ as the Counter-Pattern.<#0.5#> The New Testament presents a radically different pattern in Christ Himself. Jesus is not a man who ascends into godhood. He is the eternal Son who descends into humility, obedience, and suffering. He does not grasp authority. He empties Himself. He submits to the Father’s will and is exalted by the Father precisely because He does not seize.<#0.5#> Christian glorification follows that arc. Believers are united with Christ in His death and resurrection, transformed by grace, and raised to share in His reign as redeemed creatures, not as gods who replicate divine authority. The path to glory runs through dependence, obedience, and resurrection, not metaphysical promotion.<#0.5#> In Conclusion.<#0.5#> Christian theosis has always insisted that the line between Creator and creature is not an obstacle to intimacy with God but the very condition that makes grace possible. God remains God, and humanity is glorified precisely because it does not become God. Worship remains meaningful because divine life is shared by grace rather than duplicated by nature.<#0.5#> The King Follett Discourse crosses that line. By portraying God as a being who once progressed to godhood and by treating the human soul as metaphysically indestructible, it reframes exaltation as advancement within an eternal system rather than communion with the uncreated God. Immortality becomes inherent rather than bestowed, and godhood becomes the end of human destiny rather than union with God through Christ.<#0.5#> That shift does not restore an ancient Christian doctrine. It replaces it. In doing so, it returns to the oldest temptation humanity ever faced, godlikeness without dependence, glory without gift, and life without submission. Love possesses the massive, structural strength of Yahweh, absorbing the friction of human relationships, granting grace, and restoring peace to the community. Over my seven decades of living, I have seen families utterly destroyed because they allowed hatred to stir up endless quarrels. Choose the path of love today! In the ancient world, physical discipline was the harsh reality for those who refused to learn through instruction. If you will not allow the gentle words of God to correct your course, the universe will eventually correct you through the painful, unyielding rod of severe consequences! You can either learn through the quiet whispers of divine wisdom, or you can learn through the bruising blows of your own foolish decisions. The choice is entirely yours!<#0.5#> Notice the beautiful internal posture of the wise person in verse fourteen! "Wise people treasure knowledge." Remember our study from chapter seven, where we were commanded to treasure God's commands, guarding them like the pupil of our eye? The wise person hoards knowledge the way a miser hoards gold! They tuck it away in their heart, studying it, reflecting upon it, and keeping it safe for the exact moment it is needed. But in violent contrast, we are reintroduced to a character we met on our previous podcast! "but the babbling of a fool invites disaster." The babbling fool has no internal vault! They do not treasure anything. They constantly run their mouth, broadcasting their every thought, their every complaint, and their every unverified opinion! Conversely, crushing poverty leaves a person devastatingly vulnerable! When you have no margins, a single unexpected storm can completely wipe you out. This is exactly why biblical wisdom places such a massive emphasis on diligence, hard work, and avoiding the traps of the sluggard! God wants His people to build a secure fortress, not for the sake of arrogant pride, but for the sake of stability, generosity, and protection.<#0.5#> But lest we think that wealth is the ultimate goal, Solomon immediately qualifies this reality in verse sixteen! The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast 18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. Introduction: The Small Beginning Nobody Notices A farmer once planted a tiny seed in a corner of his property. For days, nothing seemed to happen. He watered the soil. Still nothing. A week passed. Nothing obvious. Someone looking from the road might have said, “That seed is doing nothing.” But beneath the surface, roots were forming. Life was beginning. What looked inactive was actually alive. Then one morning, a small green shoot broke through the soil. That is a good picture of the Kingdom of God. / Years later, the thing that began as something almost invisible had become impossible to ignore. Last week, in “What A Difference Jesus Makes!”, we saw Jesus call people to repentance, warn them not to judge tragedy simplistically, and then set a bent-over daughter of Abraham free on the Sabbath. The Kingdom was not just being discussed. / It was arriving. / A woman stood upright. / A captive was released. / Religious hypocrisy was exposed. And today Jesus keeps speaking plainly.
- No slogans.
- No public-relations spin.
- No attempt to make the future sound easier than it would be.
He tells His followers three uncomfortable truths:
- The Kingdom may start small, but it will prevail.
- The invitation is open, but the door will not remain open forever.
- And the Messiah’s path to glory runs straight through rejection, suffering, and death.
That is why today’s title is: “Straight Talk for Saints and Sinners” Because Jesus tells the truth to everyone.
- To the curious.
- To the committed.
- To the religious.
- To the rebellious.
- To the saint.
- To the sinner.
- And His truth is always gracious—but never soft.
Today, let’s explore four truths to help us understand the coming of God’s kingdom more fully. Truth 1: The Kingdom May Begin Small, But It Will Not Stay Small Luke 13:18–21 Jesus asks: “What is the Kingdom of God like?” Then He answers with two ordinary pictures. / A mustard seed. / And yeast in dough… Nothing flashy. / Nothing political. / Nothing militaristic. / That itself is surprising. The Mustard Seed In Jesus’ world, mustard seed was commonly used to picture something very small. / Tiny. / Easy to miss. / Easy to dismiss. Yet under the right conditions, the plant could grow large enough for birds to rest in its branches.
- Jesus is saying: Do not judge the Kingdom by its beginning.
- That would be like looking at an acorn and saying: “That could never become an oak.”
- Or looking at Bethlehem and saying: “That could never produce a King.”
- Or looking at twelve ordinary disciples and saying: “They could never change the world.” / But they did.
Ancient Israelite Background The image of a large tree sheltering birds appears in Old Testament passages such as Ezekiel 17 and Ezekiel 31. In those passages, great trees can symbolize kingdoms and empires providing shelter to nations. Jesus takes that image and applies it to God’s Kingdom. The Kingdom begins with a carpenter from Nazareth. / A few fishermen. / Some women. / A tax collector. / Ordinary people. / No army. / No palace. / No treasury. / No earthly throne. True, enduring wealth is not the result of a lucky lottery ticket, a deceitful shortcut, or passive reliance on others; it is the predictable harvest of a diligent, calloused, working hand. <#0.5#> Look at the agricultural metaphor in verse five! "A wise youth harvests in the summer, but one who sleeps during harvest is a disgrace." The universe operates on seasons appointed by the Creator. Summer is the brief, intense window of time when the crops are ripe and the weather is favorable. It requires long, exhausting, sweaty hours in the field! A wise trekker understands the season they are in and maximizes the opportunity. But the sluggard—the one who folds his hands and hits the snooze button while the crops rot on the vine—brings total disgrace upon himself and his family. If God has placed an opportunity in front of you today, do not sleep through it! Wake up, grip the plow, and do the hard work required to build your legacy.<#0.5#> Having contrasted the diligent with the lazy, Solomon now contrasts the ultimate, long-term legacies of the righteous and the wicked, connecting the profound thoughts in Proverbs chapter ten, verse six, and verse seven.<#0.5#> The godly are showered with blessings; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions. We have happy memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away.<#0.5#> Here is the absolute core of what it means to create a legacy! In verse six, we read that the godly are showered with blessings. Just as a heavy rain saturates a dry field, divine favor rests upon the head of the man or woman who walks in covenant integrity. But look at the wicked! "The words of the wicked conceal violent intentions." They may speak smoothly, attempting to cover their malice with flattery, but violence is always lurking just beneath the surface.<#0.5#> Verse seven delivers one of the most powerful, sobering truths in all of Scripture: "We have happy memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away." How will you be remembered when your trek on this earth is finally over? The righteous leave behind a fragrant, joyful memory! Their children, their neighbors, and their business partners look back on their lives with deep gratitude. But the legacy of the wicked is like a rotting, decaying corpse. It produces a foul stench, and eventually, the winds of time blow their name entirely out of human history. For much of Israel’s history, Scripture functioned as a spoken and heard reality before it existed as a fully fixed written form. Readers did not rely on written vowels because pronunciation and meaning were preserved through communal reading, memorization, and instruction. This system worked precisely because the text was embedded in a living tradition rather than dependent on orthographic completeness.<#0.5#> A consonantal system necessarily allows for flexibility. Hebrew words that share the same consonants can function as different parts of speech, carry different tenses, or even represent different words altogether, depending on how they are vocalized. As long as the text remained unpointed, that range of meaning remained visible. Meaning was not unstable, but it was not mechanically locked into a single written form.<#0.5#> The Masoretic Text preserved this ancient consonantal tradition while adding vowel points and accent marks that fixed pronunciation and syntax. Once vowels are supplied, ambiguity ends. The act of vocalization does not merely record sound. It resolves grammatical and semantic questions that the consonantal text leaves open.<#0.5#> The first segment is: Vocalization as Interpretation Rather Than Manipulation.<#0.5#> It is important to be clear about what this process is and what it is not. The Masoretes did not alter the consonantal text, suppress alternative manuscripts, or set out to undermine rival faiths. They preserved Scripture with extraordinary care and precision. The issue under discussion is not corruption or conspiracy, but interpretation.<#0.5#> Any time a reader or community supplies meaning to an ambiguous text, interpretation is involved. When interpretation becomes fixed in writing, it can also unintentionally embed assumptions into the text itself. This is how eisegesis can enter a tradition without anyone intending it. Once a particular reading becomes standard, later readers often mistake that reading for the only possible meaning rather than one legitimate resolution among several.<#0.5#> This dynamic is not unique to Judaism, nor is it morally charged. It occurs in every religious tradition that moves from oral reading to written standardization. The Masoretic vocalization reflects how the Hebrew Scriptures were understood within Jewish communities at the time the system was finalized, nothing more and nothing less.<#0.5#> The second segment is: Deuteronomy 32 and the Division of the Nations.<#0.5#> Deuteronomy 32 verse eight illustrates how this process works in practice. The verse describes how the Most High divided the nations after the flood. The Masoretic Text reads that the nations were divided according to the number of the sons of Israel. However, Hebrew manuscripts from the Dead Sea Scrolls preserve a reading that says the nations were divided according to the number of the sons of God. The Septuagint reflects the same older reading by translating the phrase as angels of God.<#0.5#> This difference does not represent competing theologies imposed on the text centuries later. It reflects which interpretive tradition was preserved when ambiguity was resolved. Earlier Jewish readers operated within a worldview that included a divine council overseeing the nations. Later rabbinic Judaism favored language that avoided that framework. The consonantal text allowed for both readings. Vocalization and word selection fixed one.<#0.5#> The third segment is: Psalm 22 and Ambiguous Action.<#0.5#> Psalm 22 verse sixteen provides another example where meaning turns on how the consonants are understood. The Masoretic Text reads like a lion my hands and my feet, a phrase that requires the reader to supply an implied action to complete the thought. Earlier witnesses, including the Septuagint and some Dead Sea Scrolls material, reflect a reading that conveys the idea of piercing the hands and feet. The difference hinges on how a small cluster of consonants is vocalized and whether it is understood as a noun phrase or a verbal form.<#0.5#> Both readings represent sincere attempts to make sense of an ambiguous line. The Masoretic tradition preserved one resolution. Earlier traditions preserved another. The ambiguity existed before vowels were ever added, and the difference arises from how that ambiguity was resolved, not from malicious intent.<#0.5#> The fourth segment is: Isaiah 7 and Lexical Range.<#0.5#> Isaiah 7 verse fourteen demonstrates how lexical meaning narrows through tradition. The Hebrew word almah refers to a young woman of marriageable age. The Masoretic vocalization preserves that general sense. The Septuagint renders the term as parthenos, a Greek word commonly used to refer to a virgin. The difference reflects how Jewish communities working in different linguistic and cultural contexts understood the same Hebrew word long before later doctrinal debates arose.<#0.5#> Here again, the issue is not mistranslation in a pejorative sense, but the natural limits of language. Words have ranges of meaning, and translation or vocalization necessarily selects one.<#0.5#> In Conclusion.<#0.5#> The Masoretic Text remains the most carefully preserved Hebrew textual tradition in existence. Its consonantal transmission is extraordinarily faithful, and its vocalization reflects a disciplined Jewish reading tradition developed within a specific historical context. Recognizing that vocalization involves interpretation does not undermine that achievement.<#0.5#> Understanding this process helps explain why ancient witnesses sometimes differ, why New Testament authors can faithfully read Scripture without Masoretic vowels, and how eisegesis can enter a text unintentionally through the fixing of meaning. We saw the stark contrast between the mocker, who meets truth with an angry insult, and the wise person, who receives correction with gratitude and grows even wiser! We were reminded that the reverent, awe-filled fear of the Lord is the absolute, unshakeable foundation of all wisdom, and that we alone bear the ultimate responsibility for the path we choose. Today, as we step forward onto Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Seventy of our ongoing trek through God’s Word, we arrive at the chilling, dramatic conclusion of the entire introductory prologue of the book of Proverbs! For nine spectacular chapters, Solomon has masterfully built a rising tension between two distinct, completely incompatible paths. Now, in the final six verses of Proverbs chapter nine, he brings this epic contrast to a definitive, unforgettable close. Just a few days ago, we watched Lady Wisdom carve her seven cosmic pillars, prepare a magnificent feast of meat and mixed wine, and invite the simple to step out of the shadows to begin a life of true, vibrant flourishing. But there is a rival house sitting on the heights of the city! There is a counterfeit hostess throwing a rival banquet, desperately competing for your attention. Today, as we explore Proverbs chapter nine, verses thirteen through eighteen, we are going to meet the woman named Folly. Having spent over fifty years focusing on and studying Biblical wisdom, and having accumulated seventy years of life experiences, I can assure you that evil rarely presents itself as something hideous; it almost always presents itself as a glamorous, thrilling shortcut. But as we will soon see, the bill for that shortcut is always paid with your very life.<#0.5#> Let us open our minds and hearts to this terrifying, realistic portrait of temptation, as recorded in the New Living Translation, grouping together the deeply connected, highly visual thoughts found in Proverbs chapter nine, verse thirteen, and verse fourteen.<#0.5#> The woman named Folly is brash. She is ignorant and doesn’t know it. She sits in her doorway on the heights overlooking the city.<#0.5#> Look at the immediate, jarring contrast between Lady Wisdom and the woman named Folly! Verse thirteen introduces her with a blunt, unflattering description: "The woman named Folly is brash. She is ignorant and doesn't know it." Think back to the beginning of chapter nine. Lady Wisdom was industrious, diligent, and productive! She built her own house, she carved her seven massive columns, she slaughtered the livestock, she mixed the spices into the wine, and she perfectly set her table! She was a master architect of a well-ordered life. But look at Folly! She has built absolutely nothing. She has prepared no meal, and she has carved no pillars. She is entirely devoid of substance! Instead of offering diligent preparation, she relies on being brash, loud, and provocative. Over my seven decades of navigating this world, I have learned a universal truth about human nature: the loudest voices in the room are very often the most ignorant. Folly uses constant noise, chaotic drama, and brash behavior to mask her complete lack of intellectual and spiritual depth!<#0.5#> Notice her geographic location in verse fourteen! "She sits in her doorway on the heights overlooking the city." She has positioned herself in the exact same elevated, highly visible location as Lady Wisdom! To fully comprehend the sinister nature of this, we must look through the lens of the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. In the ancient Near East, the "high places" were the designated locations for divine worship, the places where humanity intersected with the heavenly realm. By sitting on the heights overlooking the city, Folly is actively setting herself up as a false deity! She is a rival to Yahweh’s cosmic order, demanding the worship, the attention, and the ultimate allegiance of the travelers passing by. She offers a cheap, destructive imitation of the divine assembly.<#0.5#> The narrative now shifts to observe exactly who Folly is targeting, and the deeply deceptive method she uses to capture them, linking together the contiguous thoughts found in Proverbs chapter nine, verse fifteen, and verse sixteen.<#0.5#> She calls out to men going by who are minding their own business. “Come in with me,” she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says,<#0.5#> Listen to the insidious, predatory nature of her invitation in verse fifteen! "She calls out to men going by who are minding their own business." This is a profound, psychological insight into how temptation actually operates on the trail of life. You do not always have to go actively searching for trouble in order to find it! Sometimes, you are simply walking down the street, passively minding your own business, coasting through life without a clear, defined sense of spiritual direction. Folly preys on the passive! When you are not aggressively, intentionally pursuing God's wisdom, you become an incredibly easy target for the loud, brash distractions of the world.<#0.5#> But look at the truly terrifying tactic she utilizes in verse sixteen! "'Come in with me,' she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says..." Does that phrase sound familiar to you? It should! It is an exact, word-for-word plagiarism of Lady Wisdom’s invitation from Proverbs chapter nine, verse four! Folly steals the exact vocabulary of Wisdom to lure in the naive! This is the ultimate danger of the counterfeit. The adversary rarely attacks your faith with pure, obvious evil; he attacks it by twisting, distorting, and mimicking the language of truth. Folly promises the exact same community, the exact same satisfaction, and the exact same enlightenment that Wisdom offers, but she delivers a completely different destination. Both women are calling out to the simple and the inexperienced, but their intentions are worlds apart! Lady Wisdom calls the simple in order to heal them, transform them, and give them life. Folly calls the simple in order to exploit them, consume them, and destroy them.<#0.5#> Having lured the naive traveler to her doorway, Folly finally reveals the pathetic, tragic menu of her rival banquet, found in Proverbs chapter nine, verse seventeen.<#0.5#> “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret tastes the best!”<#0.5#> What an absolutely wretched, miserable feast! Compare this menu to the banquet of Lady Wisdom. Wisdom offered rich, nourishing meat, and carefully, exquisitely mixed wine! She offered a public, joyful, honorable feast in the light of day. But what does Folly offer? She offers a cup of stolen water and a plate of hidden, secret food! She has nothing of her own to give, so she must rely on theft, deception, and the thrilling adrenaline rush of breaking the rules. "Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret tastes the best!" She appeals directly to the darkest, most rebellious flaw in human nature—the twisted illusion that whatever is forbidden is somehow more satisfying than what is freely, righteously given.<#0.5#> This is the original, ancient lie from the Garden of Eden! It is the seductive whisper that says God is holding out on you, that His boundaries are keeping you from true happiness, and that crossing the line into secret sin will finally give you the thrill you have been missing. Over my fifty years of studying the Scriptures, I have counseled countless individuals who swallowed this exact lie. They believed the affair would bring romance, they believed the embezzled money would bring freedom, and they believed the hidden addiction would bring peace. But the sweetness of stolen water evaporates the very second it touches your lips! Food eaten in secret does not nourish your soul; it slowly poisons your conscience, isolates you from your family, and locks you inside a suffocating prison of paranoia and guilt. You spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder, terrified that the light of truth will eventually expose your secret banquet in the dark.<#0.5#> Solomon now brings the entire nine-chapter introduction to a crushing, apocalyptic close, pulling back the veil of the cosmos to reveal the ultimate reality of Folly's house, recorded in Proverbs chapter nine, verse eighteen.<#0.5#> But little do they know that the dead are there. We observed how she carved her seven unshakeable pillars, prepared a great cosmic banquet, and sent her servants out into the streets. We rejoiced in the beautiful reality that her invitation was not restricted to the elite, but was broadcast directly to the simple, the naive, and the inexperienced. She urged them to leave their simple ways behind, step into her banquet hall, and begin to truly live! Today, as we step forward onto Day Two Thousand Nine Hundred Sixty-Eight of our ongoing trek through God’s Word, we continue into Proverbs chapter nine, focusing on verses seven through twelve. In this profound passage, Solomon pauses the narrative of the grand banquet to offer a highly practical, desperately needed parenthesis on human nature. He asks a critical question: What happens when the truth of God intersects with a human heart? The answer depends entirely on the condition of that heart! Having spent over fifty years focusing on and studying Biblical wisdom, and having accumulated seventy years of life experiences, I have learned that you cannot force wisdom upon someone who is committed to rebellion. Today, Solomon provides us with the ultimate litmus test of character: how a person responds to correction.<#0.5#> Let us open our minds and hearts to this stark, realistic assessment of human interactions, as recorded in the New Living Translation, grouping together the deeply connected, contiguous thoughts found in Proverbs chapter nine, verse seven, and verse eight.<#0.5#> Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt. So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you.<#0.5#> Look at the incredibly realistic, boundary-setting advice Solomon gives us here! In verse seven, he warns, "Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt." Remember, Lady Wisdom just invited the simple to her banquet. The simple person is naive, but their heart is still open to learning. However, the mocker—the letz in Hebrew—is a completely different category of person! A mocker is someone who has hardened their heart, wrapped themselves in arrogant pride, and actively sneers at the cosmic order of Yahweh. They are not merely ignorant; they are militantly defiant. Solomon tells us that if you try to bring a righteous rebuke to a mocker, you are not going to experience a beautiful moment of breakthrough and repentance. Instead, they will weaponize your correction and hurl an insult right back in your face! If you attempt to correct the wicked, they will lash out, and you will walk away emotionally, spiritually, or even physically hurt.<#0.5#> Because of this violent reality, Solomon issues a definitive command in verse eight: "So don't bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you." In my seven decades on this earth, navigating complex business relationships, community dynamics, and family conflicts, this has proven to be one of the most difficult, yet liberating, principles of wisdom. We often possess a noble, misguided desire to fix everyone around us! We want to argue the mocker into submission; we want to debate them until they see the light. But divine wisdom gives you the permission to stop! You are not obligated to cast your pearls before swine. When a person has firmly established themselves as a mocker, correcting them is a waste of your valuable energy, and it only breeds deeper hatred. You must entrust them to the ultimate justice of the Creator, and carefully guard your own peace.<#0.5#> But look at the magnificent contrast in the second half of verse eight, seamlessly flowing into Proverbs chapter nine, verse nine!<#0.5#> But correct the wise, and they will love you. Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more.<#0.5#> What a breathtaking difference! When you bring that exact same correction to a wise person, the outcome is completely inverted. "Correct the wise, and they will love you." A wise person is not a perfect person who never makes mistakes; a wise person is someone who values the structural truth of God more than their own fragile ego! When you point out a flaw, a blind spot, or a misstep in their life, they do not retaliate with insults or hatred. They receive it as a precious gift! They love you for having the courage to protect them from their own folly.<#0.5#> Notice the compounding interest of wisdom detailed in verse nine! "Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more." The mocker is a closed system, constantly shrinking in their own bitterness. But the wise person is an open, expansive system, constantly growing in their capacity to understand! When you pour instruction into a righteous heart, it acts like a multiplier. They absorb the teaching, apply it to their daily trek, and expand their ability to flourish. This is the ultimate litmus test of your own character! When your spouse, your mentor, or your friend brings you a difficult correction, how do you respond? Do you bristle, defend, and insult like a mocker? Or do you humble yourself, listen carefully, and love them for their honesty like a wise trekker?<#0.5#> Solomon now transitions from our horizontal relationships with others, directly to our vertical relationship with the Creator, anchoring this entire discussion in the bedrock truth of Proverbs chapter nine, verse ten.<#0.5#> Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.<#0.5#> Here is the central thesis statement of the entire book of Proverbs, echoing the very words we heard back in chapter one, verse seven! "Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom." You cannot build a stable, enduring house without a solid foundation. If you try to acquire wisdom without first establishing a deep, trembling, reverent awe for Yahweh, you are building a mansion on sinking sand. To fully grasp the magnitude of this, we must view it through the Ancient Israelite divine-council worldview. The "fear of the Lord" is not a cowering, abusive terror; it is a stunning, clear-eyed recognition of exactly who is sitting on the cosmic throne! It is the absolute realization that Yahweh is the supreme, sovereign King over the heavenly assembly and the earthly realm. He sets the boundaries of reality, and we do not!<#0.5#> Look at the parallel statement: "Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment." In the Hebrew text, "the Holy One" is actually plural—Qedoshim. While it primarily refers to the majestic, plural intensity of the one true God, in the divine-council context, it also reminds us that Yahweh is surrounded by His holy heavenly host. Knowing Him is not about memorizing a list of dry, theological facts! It is about entering into an intimate, relational knowledge of His holy character. When you truly know the Holy One, when you understand His flawless justice, His boundless mercy, and His unshakeable order, that knowledge organically produces good judgment in your everyday life. Each day we will explore and consume small "nuggets of wisdom" as we cover a different subject or terrain. This 5 day a week, 5 minutes of wisdom podcast and journal will help us to live life fully while creating a living legacy. Along the way, we will be seeking wisdom and discipline and striving to understand the insights of the wise. By doing so we will learn to live a disciplined and successful life and to do what is right, just, and fair. I will count it a privilege if you will allow me be your guide as we trek together.
