Current members of La Luz del Mundo regard Naasón Joaquín García as the Apostle of Jesus Christ, maintain his innocence, and view the prosecutions as religious persecution. Former members describe a system of coercive control and abuse, and dozens of survivors cooperated with investigators. These views cannot both be true, so here is the legal record: In 2022, Joaquín García pleaded guilty in California to sexually abusing minor followers and was sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in prison, where he remains today. In 2025, he was further indicted on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges, for which he is presumed innocent unless convicted; that case is ongoing. We encourage viewers to weigh the accounts in this film against that record. Content note: This documentary discusses sexual abuse, including abuse of minors. Descriptions of that abuse are included only to the extent necessary to establish the nature, scale, and severity of the conduct committed and concealed by the church's senior leadership: as documented in court records and survivor testimony.
