This TOS novel focuses on the time period just after the completion of the Enterprise’s 5-year mission and before the start of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”. The book provided more background on Kirk’s decision to accept an Admiralty position as well as backstories for Spock and McCoy which were hinted at during the beginning of TMP.
