Tucker Carlson hosted a guest who called algebra "fake math;" dismissing anyone who values it as living "in the matrix," an anti-intellectual stance Carlson enthusiastically endorsed on air coupled with the guest's blatant antisemitism.
Mitch McConnell returned to the Senate after a three month absence, arriving in a wheelchair, visibly thinner, his speech noticeably slower; a stark contrast to the "not quite back to 100%" framing his office is using to minimize real concerns about his fitness for office. Barely sentient, the GOP pushes his clearly dying man to it's voters and demands they accept him as a proper representation of their interest in Congress.

I break down all three stories and what they reveal: an administration treating symbolic culture-war grievances as a governing priority while the actual problems — inflation, an unresolved war, a struggling economy continue to go unaddressed. But that's not the whole story, and pretending it is lets real policy failures off the hook.
In March 2025, the Trump administration's dismantling of USAID shut down a program specifically responsible for monitoring and containing the New World screwworm in Central America. Over 1,300 USDA workers took federal workforce reduction buyouts, and screwworm-specific programs were among the casualties. A parasite eradicated from the US since 1966 is now back in Texas cattle for the first time in nearly 60 years this is a direct, traceable consequence of gutting the exact prevention infrastructure that kept it out.
On top of that, Donald Trump's blanket tariffs raised costs on imported cattle, equipment, and beef trimmings that the industry relies on to meet demand, while a cattle import suspension from Mexico removed over a million head of feeder cattle from the supply chain.
The drought set the stage. The policy choices made it worse. Now his solution is to remove tariffs to make importing beef cheaper. This exposes his lie that tariffs are not responsible for driving up prices on goods for American consumers. Pay attention to what he does, not what he says.
