THE LEGEND OF SIGRID THE HAUGHTY
Thus doth the ancient history of the Slavs entwine with the tempestuous fates of the Kings of the North. 'Tis a tale of Sigrid, the haughty daughter of Duke Mieszko, who loved freedom above all else. The proud princess, ere she became wife and mother of kings, did spurn the wooing of greedy men, treating them to cruel fire. By the name of Sigrid Storråda, that is, the Haughty, did they then proclaim her.
This woman did hold fidelity to her forebears higher than foreign crowns and gold. When the King of the Norwegians, Olaf, durst raise his hand against Piast blood and struck her across the face, he knew not at all that this blow would swiftly return unto him as a doomful wave.
Sigrid did strike a wise alliance with the Danish ruler Sven, that in a great sea battle she might send her foe unto the murky depths. Yet this tale is not merely of bloody vengeance, but a teaching of cool reason. For the princess did bring peace unto distant lands, made the laws as one, and gave bread unto orphans. For what is justice, when it heedeth not mercy? Listen well to this, that whoso turneth wrath into prudence, doth bring great peace for generations to come.

THE LEGEND OF THE KLOBUK
A stern winter had bound the river Pisa in hard ice, and within the cottage of the old raftsman, the wind did but howl through the empty corners. The hardy fellow of Masuria had naught to put into his pot. Suddenly, a klobuk crept across the threshold. A beast as black as pitch, with eyes burning like coals! Listen well of this, why one ought make no pacts with a klobuk.
At first, that demon shall bear thalers and full bowls of victuals into the cottage. Thou shalt wallow in riches, stolen by night from the neighboring yeomen. Yet the wondrous silver shall swiftly lose its luster, and the klobuk shall make a very hell of thy life.
If thou dost fall into his pitiless snares, to survive and save thy soul, thou must employ a ruse. Even as the cunning fellow of Masuria, who knew how to banish the foul power from his homestead. Yet shall cunning, a scattered handful of salt, and the rushing current of the river suffice to outwit this evil? Listen well to the ancient teaching, that plain reason is more precious than stolen gold.

THE LEGEND OF SVETOVIT
A tale we recount this day, of how the desires of mortal men did tear a mighty god asunder unto the four corners of the world. When four folk at the selfsame hour did beg for deliverance, when sword, horn, and white steed did tremble in the dark, the primeval Slavic heavens were cleft in twain! Hearken how the mighty god Svetovit was born anew from human suffering.
The mighty god Svetovit did once gaze upon the world with but a single visage. Unfathomable power he wielded, yet even the gods cannot answer every mortal cry. Once upon a time, four clans came unto the temple. Warriors from the north demanded bloody might, whilst elders from the south begged for blissful peace. Tillers from the east prayed for a bountiful harvest, whilst soothsayers from the west sought a clear omen in the wake of fires. A single gaze could not encompass so many opposing paths.
Hearken unto the tale that the storyteller Małgorzata doth recount this day. Know ye what difference doth part the idol of Zbruch, called Światowid, from the primeval lord of the heavens. Uncover the mystery of how the four faces came to be: War, Harvest, Prophecy, and Destiny. Feel the wisdom of the forebears' faiths, that thou mightest grasp which of the faces doth hold our entire world in check unto this very day.

THE LEGEND OF DYDKO
Whence came the household sprites? From a single scamp they descend. In ages past, when settlements stood closer to the dense forest than to reason, there lived a most nimble lad. He had two eyes sharp as coals, and a smile that ever heralded dire mischief.
Ancient Slavic mythology hides within it not only dark monsters, but likewise beings who cared for human merriment. Ofttimes, the hiding of wares and the tying of shoes into a great knot is the finest sport. Hearken, then, how a great market was turned into very pandemonium, how threads found their way into pots, and eggs joined with the fishes.

THE LEGEND OF VELES
Ere the lord of the underworld descended into the realm of Navia, he walked upon the earth in human guise. Tall and dark was he, and his eyes shone like deep wells. The beasts straightway sensed his power and bowed their heads in humility. And whosoever refused the will of the underworld lord lost far more than he would have willed.
There lived in those days a young shepherd, Borut. A grievous sickness consumed his mother, and a small herd of cows was his only wealth. On a certain autumn night, a stranger guest appeared in the fold and demanded a cow. The terrified youth refused, whereupon the mighty god Veles spoke Words that changed all things.
Hearken to the legend of old. The storyteller Małgorzata weaves a tale of how the mighty lord of Navia brought destiny unto men. How thin is the boundary between the living and the dead, like unto a spider's web. For though Veles sought not man's ruin, he taught great humility before the laws of the earth without mercy. THE LEGEND OF THE LAMIA
Learn ye the secret of the White River and the demonic creature with the body of a serpent and a woman. Old folk in the Bulgarian Pirin Mountains say that ere the first human paths were trodden there, a strange and wondrous heavy river flowed in the valley. The mysterious, ancient Lamia dwelt there. Above, she resembled a maiden, but from the waist down her body was covered in dire, scaly coils.
The Lamias, demons known unto the South Slavs, seldom sought strife with man. Yet this lady of the White River possessed a wondrous, magnetic power. Whosoever halted but once by her stream lost his heart for daily toil and could no longer dwell among human kind. Peasants returned from the forest depths utterly changed, sunk in silence or seeing things hidden from the sight of others.
Hearken, then, unto the Storyteller Małgorzata and know why the terrified villagers gathered at dawn and marched to the waters, bearing sharp iron and destructive fire. How they sought to drive the lady of the waters from her ancient domain. Understanding not that the eternal order of the world cannot be broken so easily.

THE LEGEND OF THE DROWNER
Old folk say that every river and old mill had its hidden master. Thus it was ages ago in a certain mill. Above the swift current stood a wooden structure whose wheel turned by day and by night. Howbeit, one wondrous thing gave the miller no peace. When the moon shone bright, the mill wheel would suddenly halt without any cause.
The water flowed swiftly, yet the great machine kept silence, as though bewitched by evil intent. Upon the wet planks of the pier, the master found strange frog-like footprints that vanished into the depths. This was no human doing! That selfsame night, the miller kept a lonely vigil at the doorway. Whereupon, from the black depths, a wet, greenish figure emerged, its hair tangled with river weed. Thus did the ancient legend of the drowner come to life before a mortal's eyes.
Yet that water demon sought not ruin, but wept with a mournful voice over his lost home. Storyteller Małgorzata speaketh today of how violating the order of nature can bring down dire punishment. For when a great downpour came, the river fiercely claimed its rights. Yet if one holdeth respect and care for nature and ancient laws, a mighty ally we may find in them.

THE LEGEND OF THE ZMEY
Olden shepherds do say that ere man did plow the first field, the wild mountains held their lord. And his name was Zmey, who hailed straight from the misty peaks of the Rhodopes. Know ye then a creature that possessed two visages, altogether unalike. Yet he sought neither gold nor bloody sacrifice.
Hidden by day, by night he would descend unto the Slavic villages in the guise of a fair youth. The Zmey sought neither gold nor blood offerings. His heart yearned for the love of an earthly maiden, and when he met her, he did encompass her with mighty warding. When through the darkwood she walked, even the bloodthirsty wolves would fall silent at once.
Hearken unto the tale that the storyteller Małgorzata doth recount, and know how the olden myths did explain the ruinous forces of nature. When the cruel demons of hail drew near, the defender of men would soar high into the heavens. His mortal vessel would shatter like a brittle shell, unleashing a fiery beast of three heads. For a true warden doth not forsake his subjects in their hour of need. Even if in bloody fray, as in that with the wicked, many-headed beast named Lamia, he were to lay down his earthly life.

THE LEGEND OF RODOVYNY
The olden beliefs do tell that the mamuny do but wait for a little babe, that they might do it harm. Then must the wise woman perform her rites. She must cast mugwort and juniper into the fire, and drive away the evil powers with the smoke. Thus begins the wondrous rite of rodovyny.
Rodovyny is an ancient rite, which doth tightly bind the kin. The father wraps the threshold in red wool, whilst at midnight bread, honey, and milk are set upon the table. The Rozhanitsy and the god Rod do arrive in silence, to write the child's fate and ward it against the mamuny.
On the seventh day, the sacred bath of the newborn came to pass. Into the water went chamomile, oak leaves, a silver coin, and an egg for the vigor of life. 'Twas pure magic and the wisdom of nature, which our forefathers did fiercely revere.
Listen well, as the storyteller Małgorzata doth speak of olden traditions. Of reverence for one's roots, the secrets of the Slavic chamber, and customs of centuries past. Let the ancient fire burn away the dread, and may wisdom grant ye strength.

THE LEGEND OF DEVANA
There, where the path of man doth end, begins the realm of profound silence. In the darksome heart of the wildwood, amidst the mists, the great lady of wild nature was born. Ere she gained a visage and a voice, she was but the rustle of leaves and the chill of the morn. Men felt her breath when they ventured too deep into the thicket. Fear and humility brought it to pass that a mighty name was bestowed upon her at last. Devana.
Listen well of the days when the forest hunted alongside its wardens. And of why the ancient Slavic mythology sought not deities high in the heavens, but within the earth itself. Of the birth of the sovereign of the woods. Of the wild Lady with hair like unto tangled branches, whose eyes gleamed as the moonlight upon the water.
She had no need of weapons, for the whole of the wilderness was her faithful servant. 'Twas the words of men that called her into being. A goddess. The true queen of shadows. The tales of yore told by the hearth-fire gave warning of her wrath, yet also taught reverence for nature. Bear ye this ancient tradition in mind, for the earth was never empty.
