9 OTT 2025 · Two years after the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, grief, outrage, and displacement continue to ripple across the world and across identities. In this episode, we look at how Latino histories of colonization, diaspora, and resistance shape our understanding of this conflict and how Jewish Latinos, in particular, often find themselves torn between cultural memory and political conviction.
This conversation brings together two voices with deeply personal ties to these layered histories:
- Joaquín, the late cousin of our co-host Briar Rose, grew up between El Salvador and the United States, shaped by the shadow of civil war, U.S. intervention, and migration. His reflections, recorded before his passing, speak to the inherited trauma and empathy of those who’ve lived through displacement and violence, and how that informs solidarity with Palestinians.
- David, cousin of cohost Edward, is Colombian Jewish and lived in Israel, where he witnessed the fear, mourning, and polarization that followed October 7. His perspective wrestles with faith, identity, and the pain of watching a homeland, both ancient and modern, consumed by cycles of vengeance and survival.
Together, their dialogue explores what it means to hold multiple truths:
- How Latinos see echoes of their own histories in Israel and Palestine
- The tension between justice and safety, faith and politics, colonization and survival
- How Jewish and non-Jewish Latinos navigate belonging in global conversations about oppression
The episode is both a tribute and a reckoning, a space to honor Joaquín’s memory, to listen to David’s lived experience, and to ask how the past two years have reshaped what it means to stand for humanity, even when history keeps dividing us.
