Neal Elbaum is a self employed mechanic. Neal grew his business from being too busy. He started connecting with other mechanics and built a network of independent contractors willing to cover work for him when he was too busy. Eventually it got to the point that Neal would "broker" out his work to other trusted mechanics and focus on getting more clients while the mechanics he was working with would cover the work. It became a win win for everyone involved - clients get cheaper rates and mechanics get enough work to keep them busy full time.
