15 AGO 2026 · What They Want, What They Need is a mixtape about getting into the groove – and then breaking it open. Taking its cue from Sun Ra’s remark that “James Brown gives the people what they want; I give them what they need,” the mix moves from funk and insistent rhythms into punk, no wave, free jazz and other forms of musical dislocation.The point isn’t to abandon pleasure for difficulty, but to ask what becomes possible when a groove is disturbed: when repetition turns strange, the expected route disappears, and another way of listening has to be found. James Brown’s Night Train sets off knowing exactly where it’s going. Sun Ra’s spaceship arrives somewhere else entirely.
