The shooter was identified as 67-year-old Anthony Polito, a former university professor who had unsuccessfully applied for a job at UNLV. The shooting began on the 4th floor of the business school building and then continued onto other floors. Students outside were forced to flee and hide in fear as gunshots rang out. Two university police officers engaged Polito in a shootout outside the building, resulting in his death.
