Dale and Tamara Chamberlain explore what it means to experience the abundant life that Jesus promised us by tackling ancient truths in everyday settings.
7 FEB 2023 · If you grew up in low church evangelical spaces like we did, liturgy might not have featured heavily in your spiritual upbringing. In fact, you may not be familiar with it at all.
Liturgical elements in worship services include things like call and response prayers, corporate recitations of key biblical passages, creeds, or blessings, or communion as a central part of gathered worship.
While many Protestant denominations practice elements of liturgy, many evangelicals have tended to shy away from them. That is, until recently, as younger evangelicals have begun to express renewed interest in some of these ancient practices.
In this episode, we discuss the history of liturgy and liturgical practices, why they are so compelling, their benefits, as well as how uncritically adopting some of these practices may be accompanied by pitfalls.

31 GEN 2023 · It's no secret that we live in divided times. This is true of our culture at large, but it's also true within the church. Further, the things that divide us can often be so personal and painful that they keep us from even seeing people on the other side of the disagreement as fellow Christians.
But as we look to history, even with all our historic misdeeds against one another, there is one document (apart from the New Testament) that all faithful Christians, whether Protestant, Roman Catholic, or Eastern Orthodox, can agree on. It's what's known as the Apostles' Creed.
In this episode, we take a look at the Apostles' Creed, what it says, how we got it, and why it matters to our faith today.

24 GEN 2023 · It has often been said in Christian circles that anxiety is "temporary atheism." But is that true?
In this episode, we take a look at what the Bible has to say about anxiety, and whether what the biblical authors are referring to when they use the word translated as "anxiety" is the same thing that we refer today when we speak about anxeity as a clinical diagnosis.
Our hope is to interpret these passage of Scripture in context, as well as in a way that does not inflict more harm on those who are already struggling with their mental health.

17 GEN 2023 · History is replete with examples of the Christian Church wielding its power to destructive ends. Far too often, Christians have supported violence, oppression, or the mistreatment of other people created in the image of God.
But that isn't the only thing the Church has done in the last 2,000 years. It has also served society through philanthropy, advancing education and scientific inquiry and serving as a key contributor to the quality of life that many of us enjoy in even the most secular society today.
In this episode, we take a look at the things that Christians, motivated by their belief in Jesus and Christian theology, have contributed to the world by way of literature, education, science and medicine, and welfare programs.

10 GEN 2023 · Conspiracy theories have always been a part of American life and culture, but up until about seven years ago, they existed on the fringes of society. More recently, they have become mainstream.
In fact, through a constellation of accusations and conspiracy theories, an entire movement known as QAnon has been birthed—and with consequences that have been undeniably corrosive to society.
Even still, many Christians have found themselves wrapped up in the various conspiracy theories that are a part of or associated with QAnon.
In this episode, we explore why that might be the case. We offer a brief overview of the history of QAnon, why so many American Christians have become so involved with it, and why we should care.

3 GEN 2023 · Recently, controversy erupted over a statue on the campus of Princeton University.
The statue depicts John Witherspoon, an American founding father, pastor, denominational leader in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, and the sixth president of Princeton. Presiding over the school for a quarter of a decade, he has been credited with bringing back Princeton from the brink of financial collapse. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and an influential figure in helping garner support for the ratification of the United States Constitution.
He was also a slaveowner to two enslaved people, and he lectured and voted against the abolition of slavery in New Jersey. He believed that emancipation would mean freeing enslaved people "to their own ruin."
Because of this, some are calling for the statue honoring him on the campus of Princeton to be taken down. In response, others are arguing that it ought to remain. Among those arguing to keep the statue is pastor and theologian Kevin DeYoung.
In this episode, we take a closer look at who Witherspoon was, his significance and the significance of his views on slavery, and whether possibly taking down the statue is a result of cancel culture or merely a more honest retelling of our country's (and the church's) checkered history.

27 DIC 2022 · If you try hard enough, you can get the bible to say whatever you want it to. Whatever your agenda, you can probably find some bible verses to back your argument up.
This begs the question: what does the bible actually say? What does God intended for us to understand from his word? Certainly not simply a reiteration of our own agendas.
In this episode (which originally aired on February 16, 2021), we talk about how to interpret the bible––a field of study called hermeneutics.
We discuss the different approaches to hermeneutics, and we give you some practical tips for when you sense someone might be using a bible verse out of context.

20 DIC 2022 · If you are a follower of Jesus, should you self-identify as a sinner or as a saint? You might say that both are true.
Nevertheless, how we identify ourselves matters, because it determines the course of our actions. What we do tends to flow from who we are. So it’s important to cling to the identity you’ve been given in Jesus. You are a saint.
In this episode (which originally aired on May 26, 2020), we discuss why describing yourself simply as a “sinner saved by grace” might not be the best thing.

13 DIC 2022 · There has recently been some talk in academic circles about the idea of Jesus being trans.
In fact, one Cambridge University professor recently made headlines for arguing in a sermon that artistic depictions of Jesus throughout history seem to indicate that he has been portrayed as trans. As you might imagine, the sermon received considerable blowback, both from the people who were in the pews at the time, as well as from media outlets the world over.
Nevertheless, this professor is not the first one to try and forge a theological connection between the trans community and Jesus––even if his argument is among the most outlandish.
In this episode, we take a look at three different ways people have argued that Jesus is trans (or at least that he can closely identify with the trans experience), and discuss whether there is anything within any of these arguments that is worth taking note of.

6 DIC 2022 · Christmastime is here! And that means that we are decking the halls with all of our favorite decorations.
Among your decorations may be a nativity scene. We have one in our home that Dale actually purchased in Bethlehem. It stays on our shelf all year long!
But as we look at that nativity depiction, there are some pretty glaring inaccuracies if we compare it to the biblical account. In fact, we'd be hard pressed to find a nativity decoration or living nativity production that comes even close to accurately portraying the events of Jesus birth as they most likely happened.
Where's the disconnect, and what actually happened on that night? In this episode, we discuss!
