2 DIC 2019 · The Hong Kong protests have gone on for over half a year, with news of the city’s troubles spreading internationally. While providing a summary of some of the impacts of the protests, this episode will not be focused on conveying the day-to-day updates, instead centering on stories of those from within the city and on its periphery. We interviewed Nitika, a Hong Kong native and a Master’s student here at UChicago; a journalist from mainland China; and Liz from the US with ties to Taiwan, who is also a Master’s student here at UChicago. Their views help us to unpack the different understandings of the conflict from across the globe as well as identify some of the possible outcomes of this troubled time.
Focused on delivering updates occurring in and about China, new episodes of the Just China will be published monthly.
Our next episode will be a follow-up on Hong Kong of a live recording of a panel event held on campus. Titled “The 2019 Hong Kong Protests - What does the Future Hold for Hong Kong?,” the panel comprised of senior Hong Kong pro-democracy politician Ms. Emily Lau, pro-Beijing think tanker and former Hong Kong government official Dr. Henry Ho, and University of Notre Dame Professor Victoria Hui. The panel took place over Skype, and was moderated by University of Chicago Professor Dali Yang.
