This year, to commemorate the 131st Anniversary of the 1889 Johnstown Flood amidst the presence of coronavirus and social distancing, the Johnstown Area Heritage Association will be presenting a series of virtual plays about Johnstown’s three major floods--1889, 1936, and 1977--written by senior AP Literature and Composition students from Forest Hills High School. Originally intended to be presented live at the Johnstown Flood Museum, these plays were instead recorded remotely by a talented group of actors to create an audio product in the spirit of radio dramas. We invite you to come experience the history of these three floods, the people they impacted, and the city--Johnstown, Pennsylvania--whose history has been shaped by them.

28 MAG 2020 · In 1977, as Johnstown faces recession and concerns about the future of the Bethlehem Steel mills, the city is rocked by another historic flood in this play that shows the grit and determination of steel mill culture.
Chuck Arnold is a Johnstown steel worker with a wife and two children. He enjoys his work, and tries to ignore concerns that things may soon change in the mills. But soon, larger forces in the form of flood waters will force Chuck, his family, his co-workers, and his town to face larger challenges and be reminded of what is most important as they strive to be resilient in the face of adversity.

Sixteen-year-old Fidah McCray has dreams of being an artist and a performer, but is discouraged by her family's reminders to be more responsible and mature. When Johnstown is suddenly faced with another severe flood, Fidah will have to quickly learn about taking responsibility, while also learning the continued importance of her dreams and her family.

William and Alice are two teenagers spending their summer at South Fork, the mountain retreat of several wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists. However, William's family is soon set to leave for the Oklahoma Territory, threatening to tear the two apart. Meanwhile, there are rumblings about the South Fork Dam and whether it is stable, and the risks this presents to Johnstown, the teeming industrial city located at the foot of the valley. Come listen to this new take on one of the most famous disasters in American history, the 1889 Johnstown Flood.
