You might never have heard of it, but this ore — known as coltan for short — contains a key metal used in the manufacture of electronic circuit boards that power smartphones, game consoles and computers.
But the story of coltan is about much more than mining profits and technological wonder. It is also a story of exploitation.
Congo's black gold
Years of violence and political conflict across the Democratic Republic of Congo have made its vast mineral wealth an attractive revenue raiser — and rebel groups will do whatever it takes to control supply.
As a result, the coltan mining industry, and the prized metal tantalum extracted from it, is a "conflict mineral", closely linked to a range of human rights abuses in a similar way that Africa's so-called blood diamonds are also sold to fund conflict.

11 FEB 2021 · I'm Absolutely So Sick Of Ads Invading EVERY Part of My Life
I went to the gas station. There's an ad on the pump. Went to watch a movie on Amazon Prime Video. Got some ads DURING the movie. YouTube's ads are getting worse. I can't SAY anything in my house without getting ads about it. We just ate mac n' cheese for dinner two nights ago, and guess what ad I got on YouTube today? Velveeta cheese and shells. It's getting downright creepy.
Everywhere I go or look, there's an ad in my face trying to sell me something. It's MADDENING. I can't watch a video, a movie, nothing, even on services I already pay for! This endless swath of ads and promotions can't be good for our mental health. It's certainly driving me crazy.
EDIT: I don't have Alexa or whatever for this every reason and never have. That's why it's creeping me out lol
EDIT: I've had Brave installed for less than an hour and I already love it. Thanks Reddit!
EDIT: All the boomers in the comments saying, "gO oUtSIde" c'mon. That's the best you've got? As if I NEVER leave my home. And there are never ads outside...like idk, billboards?

6 FEB 2021 · Each day on average, 30 Black Americans are killed by guns and more than 110 experience non-fatal injuries. At least every other day, a Black person is shot and killed by police. These trends worsen in large cities, where Black Americans make up 68% of homicide victims. Gun violence further clusters in specific social networks and neighborhood sub-sections. For decades, residents have come together to ensure public safety within their communities through street outreach, hospital-based violence intervention programs, and more. But lawmakers need to do their part. They must prioritize community- and evidence-based solutions to gun violence, assess their racial impacts, and develop systems to end and ensure accountability for police shootings.

5 FEB 2021 · I have found that practicing extreme discipline is the only way to accomplish my financial goals. The way I stay disciplined is by establishing sustainable habits such as calculating my spending. Calculating my daily spending is essential when managing my everyday expenditures. For instance, I keep a daily financial discipline journal that keeps me on track. I started this journal when I worked for the Homewood Suites in 2015 as chief engineer for three different properties. This position required me to keep track of everyday expenses, and the task became very tedious considering I was also tasked with managing five other maintenance men, plus hiring the housekeeping staff. Once I started my journey of tracking everyday expenses, the tedious task became my hidden key to successfully excelling at my job. I can confidently say that, during my six years of working for Homewood Suites, none of my projects were over budget. Which allowed me to grow in the company. This experience has led me to use extreme discipline in my personal life. Extreme discipline works for me because it keeps me on track to enjoy fun activities; at the same time, I am staying out of debt and fulfilling my financial objectives.
