Christians are often ambivalent about the social and economic freedoms that have emerged in the wake of the Enlightenment. How do we parse the good and bad of capitalism and liberalism? 2 SET 2021 · Can the love of the common good be recovered when we live in countries whose culture and institutions seem at odds with it? Should we retreat in enclaves, join secession movements, or stay put in our local community, wherever it may be? Can a political common good ever be achieved given the political realities that we live in? What is the Christian called to do in such a situation?

16 AGO 2021 · The common good is widely acknowledged as a fundamental principle of political life. Yet totalitarian regimes have committed countless atrocities in its name. To this day there is much misunderstanding of what the common good means. Is it a set of basic goods and services to be doled out by the State for the benefit of all? Fr. 16 AGO 2021 · In the last chapter of Shadow Work, Illich offers an apocalyptic view of industrial societies and the forced segregations that have been imposed on families and on people for the sake of efficiency. Is his a Marxian critique of capitalism or does he offer a third way that even supporters of the free market should give heed to?
16 AGO 2021 · In the fourth chapter of Shadow Work, Illich offers the thought of Hugh of St. Victor on the mechanical arts as a means to the development of personal virtue, contrasting it to the modern development of science for mass consumption. Is Illich’s view of modern science and technology that of a romantic Luddite wistful about a past that’s never been, or has he identified a key vulnerability in the narrative of progress?
16 AGO 2021 · We begin our discussion of Ivan Illich’s Shadow Work. In the second chapter of the book, Illich focuses on the standardization of language in the late Renaissance as a means to expand the power of the State, contrasting it with the flourishing of vernacular communications that naturally occur in free human societies. Is control over language the first step toward the top-down institutionalization of virtue development that is the mark of the modern state?
16 AGO 2021 · The God, Man, and Markets podcast is a discussion among Charlie Deist, Fr. Brad Elliott, David Clayton, and Dr. Michel Accad, on faith, culture, and life in society.
