Along with undeniable talent and a love for the water, another thread connects the world’s top surfers: a supportive family figure. Host Peter Flax, editor-in-chief of the Red Bulletin magazine, takes us on the wild journey of generational athleticism in the new podcast series Family Crest: Surf’s Up. “Family dynamics are always fascinating, and, in this case, there’s a lot to chew on,” says Flax. In September 2023, Caroline Marks arguably reached her potential by winning the world championship title on the World Surfing League’s championship tour. As a kid, Olympic surfer https://www.redbull.com/us-en/athlete/kolohe-andino was surrounded by professional surfers. His dad, Dino Andino, came up in nascent era of professional surfing in the 1980s and worked in the surf industry thereafter. Kolohe's a part of a special cohort of current pros who as young kids showed immense talents out in the water. Kolohe’s earliest memories are of joining his dad at competitions around the world. Once Kolohe entered the pro circuit himself as a teenager, the expectations mounted—only recently has he been able to put less pressure on himself. Caroline preferred riding horses before becoming the youngest surfer to qualify in the WSL at age 15. What inspired the shift? Caroline realized that to impress her two older brothers, Luke and Zach, she’d have to beat them at their own game. Seven years in, and no longer a rookie, Caroline is considered somewhat of a veteran of pro surfing, but she’s only 21 years old. And on the heals of recent win at the Rip Curl WSL Finals 2023, Caroline is the new world champion, but she'll have you know: she's just getting started.
