Sometimes a place feels older than its ruins. You stand where thousands once lived, ruled, celebrated, and vanished, and for a moment the silence feels occupied. Empires Before The Fall explores that uneasy space where lost civilizations, historical mysteries, and stories of collapse leave behind questions that facts alone cannot always settle.
These stories follow empires approaching their final days, when power begins to fracture and what seemed permanent starts slipping away. Through forgotten warnings, strange accounts, and the human fears surrounding fallen kingdoms, the past becomes uncomfortably close. History may explain how an empire ended—but what if some places remember more than history can prove?

30 OTT 2026 · A king who ruled Italy sits at a Ravenna banquet with Theodoric - then a single sword stroke ends a state-building project. What happened to Odoacer?
The sword stroke at the banquet that ended seventeen years of state-building
In this episode, we follow the nineteen-year arc from Odoacer's seizure of power to the Ravenna banquet where Theodoric struck, tracing the administrative choices, coinage, and senatorial alliances that defined his rule. What decisions and alliances built a functioning regime - and which one move unmade it?
Person: Odoacer
Date: 15 March 493 (banquet in Ravenna)
Location: Ravenna
Topic: Seventeen years of state-building and one fatal banquet strike
Event: Peace treaty and subsequent killing at a banquet
- Odoacer rose from federate soldier to ruler after his troops proclaimed him king in August 476 and he deposed Romulus Augustulus.
- Instead of claiming the imperial purple, Odoacer sent the regalia to Emperor Zeno, while expanding control by securing Sicily and absorbing Dalmatia.
- He deliberately restored and empowered the Roman Senate, elevating aristocrats like Boethius and Symmachus to high office.
- Odoacer issued copper coinage marked S.C. (Senatus Consulto), reviving a third-century Roman practice that influenced later monetary reform.
- Despite seventeen years of administrative continuity and surviving chancery records, one chronicled sword stroke at a Ravenna banquet abruptly halted his project. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

29 OTT 2026 · A two-kilometre blind spot in the ocean swallowed humanity’s excess heat; instruments left the deep unreadable. What was hiding two kilometres down?
The two-kilometre blind spot that hid ninety percent of the heat
In this episode, we lay out how scientists measured atmosphere, land and ice yet found less than ten percent of the heat humans added to the Earth system, and how the missing ninety percent was stored in the ocean. We follow the measurement challenges, the ocean’s layered physics, and the steps that led researchers to confront a vast, hidden heat reservoir - what questions did that reveal?
Person: human civilization (heat source)
Period: 1971-2018 (initial anomaly)
Location: ocean (primarily below 700 metres)
Event: deployment of thousands of autonomous instruments
Topic: ocean heat content and measurement gaps
- Early measurement networks sampled surface and coastal zones but left vast ocean regions and depths sparsely observed.
- Natural variability-El Niño, La Niña, volcanic cooling-masked long-term heat accumulation in sparse time series.
- The ocean’s layered structure concentrated heat into the thermocline and deep ocean, where mixing is slow and residence times are long.
- By 2020 roughly one third of added ocean heat had penetrated below 700 metres, following well-known circulation and mixing processes.
- Solving the blind spot required scaling autonomous observations to thousands of floats and a new approach to mapping heat in the upper two thousand metres. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

28 OTT 2026 · A missing ruler's name on every coin and a single three-line epitaph-what actually happened in those chaotic years of early Islam?
The coins refused to name a ruler - and histories filled the gap
In this episode, we present the surviving pieces of a vanished administrative world and trace how gaps in contemporary evidence left later historians to assemble a narrative. We ask how absence-of names on coins, of inscriptions, of contemporary records-shaped the story of the first four caliphs and the Rashidun state's rise.
Person: Zuhayr
Date: 644 CE (inscription year)
Event: Rashidun Caliphate expansion across Byzantine and Sassanid territories
Topic: absence of rulers' names on contemporary coins and inscriptions
Period: 7th century, thirty-year Rashidun era
- A three-line stone epitaph carved by Zuhayr in 644 records a death without title or imperial names.
- No confirmed coin, seal, or inscription from the Rashidun era names Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, or Ali.
- Contemporary coinage instead bears four Arabic words-“In the name of God”-omitting any ruler identification.
- The Rashidun armies advanced through regions exhausted by decades of Byzantine-Sassanid war and plague, encountering depleted treasuries and armies.
- Major administrative claims (e.g., Umar’s Diwan and pension lists) are first documented in chronicles written centuries later. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

27 OTT 2026 · A caravan of Kushan gold ingots is found in Central Asia-so where did Rome’s wealth actually come from?
The ingots' platinum signature contradicted Rome's gold supply
In this episode, we follow the question at the center of the Kushan Empire: the unexplained origin of the gold that funded two centuries of stability across Eurasia. How could an empire that controlled the sole corridor between Rome and China rely on a supply of gold with a chemical fingerprint no known Roman mine matches?
Person: Kanishka
Date: 1972
Location: Dalverzin Tepe, present-day Uzbekistan
Topic: Platinum and palladium signatures in Kushan gold
Event: Archaeometallurgical spectral analysis
- Archaeologists recovered circular ingots and rectangular bars stamped in Kharoshthi with Mitra from Dalverzin Tepe in 1972.
- Composition tests found concentrations of platinum and palladium that excluded every known Roman mine.
- The Kushan Empire controlled the corridor between Rome and China and minted its own currency across its territory.
- The standard collapse narrative lists external pressures but does not explain the empire’s extraordinary gold-based economy.
- Modern studies confirm the ore source and smelting technology existed but the actual mine producing that platinum-bearing gold remains unidentified. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

26 OTT 2026 · A Khitan government seal found in Central Asia - so how did a dead dynasty keep governing?
The Khitan government seal stamped a dead dynasty alive
In this episode, we follow the discovery of a bronze Khitan government seal dated 1197 and trace how a displaced Liao administrative system reappeared in Central Asia. The episode covers Yelü Dashi’s westward flight, the survival of Liao bureaucratic practices, and the puzzle of governance under a dynasty that had lost its homeland. How did a fallen Chinese dynasty continue to function far from its capital?
Person: Yelü Dashi
Date: 1197 (seal dating)
Location: Ustyurt Plateau, Central Asia
Event: Discovery of a Khitan government seal
Period: Early 13th century Qara Khitai expansion
- An archaeologist in spring 2019 unearthed a 330g bronze seal with twenty Khitan characters near the Ustyurt Plateau.
- The seal was dated to 1197 and identified as an official government seal from the Great Liao administrative system.
- After the Jurchen Jin dismantled the Liao, Yelü Dashi fled west in 1122, was captured in 1123, then left Jin custody and rode west again in 1124.
- In 1124 Dashi proclaimed himself gurkhan at Kedun with twenty thousand soldiers and preserved the Liao name, language, and bureaucracy while moving west.
- Between 1129 and 1140 Dashi’s forces absorbed kingdoms and cities across Central Asia, ruling diverse Muslim populations without imposing conversion while maintaining administrative tools like censuses and seals. 25 OTT 2026 · An emperor paid to keep his capital while a steppe khagan held the Tang hostage - what changed in four years after the ransom?
The sky-gnats that turned Illig's raiders into tributaries
In this episode, we follow the clash between Illig Qaghan’s steppe cavalry and the newly founded Tang dynasty, tracing how raids, diplomacy, and unexpected factors reshaped their relationship. We lay out the rise of the Ashina-led Göktürk power, the ransom at the capital in 626, and ask what precisely shifted those riders into tributaries over four years.
Person: Illig Qaghan
Event: Ransom paid at the walls of the Tang capital, summer 626
Origin: Ashina clan migration from Gansu corridor to Altai (c. 439-552)
Tribute: up to 100,000 rolls of silk annually at Göktürk peak
- The Ashina began as five hundred families moved west from the Gansu corridor and were later settled as ironworkers in the Altai.
- Bumin unified Göktürk clans after the Rouran insult and founded a khaganate that stretched from Byzantium’s borders to China.
- Internal clan divisions produced repeated succession crises and civil wars that invited Chinese dynastic influence.
- Illig’s forces raided Tang repeatedly and in 626 rode to the capital’s walls, accepting a ransom that bought temporary peace.
- Within four years after the ransom, the same cavalry empire had been absorbed by the Tang’s orbit, raising the question of what non-military forces altered their fate. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

24 OTT 2026 · In ancient Syria a brittle wild wheat gave way to tough mutants; how did a plant make people stay and build granaries?
The brittle rachis that made humans stay and build civilization
In this episode, we follow how a tiny change in wheat's biology shifted human behavior across millennia. We trace wild einkorn and emmer from seasonal harvests to the first granaries and ask how grain-more than metals or money-anchored people and institutions.
Person: Agnes Denes
Location: Lower Manhattan
Site: Tell Abu Hureyra
Period: ~21,000 years ago to 7,600 BCE
Crop: Wild einkorn / domesticated emmer
- In 1982 Agnes Denes planted two acres of wheat on a landfill visible from the World Trade Center and Statue of Liberty.
- Wild einkorn’s natural brittle rachis caused ripe stalks to shatter and scatter seeds, resisting human harvests.
- Rare mutants with tougher rachises survived gathering and were repeatedly brought back to camps and spilled near shelters.
- Over centuries near sites like Tell Abu Hureyra and Mureybet, gathered seeds shifted local wheat populations toward nonshattering traits.
- By ~8,300-7,600 BCE at Çayönü and ~8,500 BCE in the Fertile Crescent, stored wheat led to the first granaries and institutions to manage them. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

23 OTT 2026 · A bronze tablet with intact chains found at Hattusa suggests officials left expecting to return - so what forced the evacuation?
The bronze chains that showed they left on purpose, not under attack
In this episode, we follow the archaeological evidence from Hattusa that reframes the end of a capital: the objects left behind, the archive removed, and the sequence of abandonment and fire. What does a public bronze tablet with its chains still attached tell us about how and why the city was vacated?
Person: Suppiluliuma I
Date: ca. 1200 BCE
Location: Hattusa
Event: abandonment followed by fire
Topic: bronze tablet with chains
- Archaeologists excavated a five-kilogram bronze tablet thirty-five meters west of the Sphinx Gate, still bearing two hanging chains.
- The tablet was thirty-five by twenty-four centimeters and had been buried for more than three thousand years.
- Hattusa’s massive fortifications-walls over six kilometers long and eight meters thick-remained standing when the city ceased to function.
- Final occupation layers show storerooms and temples systematically cleared: cult statues, sacred objects, and inventory tablets were removed rather than looted.
- Stratigraphy indicates the city’s fire occurred after the king, priests, and scribes had left through the gates, not during an immediate conquest. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

22 OTT 2026 · How did Oswald Spengler’s 1918 two‑volume argument reshape what Germans believed history meant?
The timing of Spengler's summer 1918 release made defeat sound inevitable
In this episode, we look at how the publication context of The Decline of the West turned a philosophical argument into a social event. Why did a collapsing Germany embrace a book that framed decline as a biological, inevitable process?
Person: Oswald Spengler
Date: Summer 1918
Location: Germany
Work: The Decline of the West, Volume I
Sales: ~100,000 copies in eight years
- Spengler wrote alone in rented rooms in Munich, funded by a small inheritance and selling furniture to survive.
- Volume I was finished in 1917, revised during the war, and published while German armies were retreating.
- The book proposed eight independent high cultures, each with a roughly two-thousand-year cycle of Culture then Civilization.
- Spengler framed Western decline as a biological fact leading to a phase he called Caesarism within about a century.
- Critics labeled the work amateur and analogical, yet ordinary Germans bought it during currency collapse and bread lines. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.

21 OTT 2026 · A defeated Pandya king carried his dynasty's crown into Anuradhapura. What did possession of a crown change?
The Pandya crown sitting in Anuradhapura forced its conquest
In this episode, we follow the sequence of raids, a displaced royal regalia, and the decisions that escalated raids into occupation. It traces how a crown taken in 947 reshaped Chola strategy and asks why Anuradhapura became a target for permanent control.
Person: Rajasimha (Pandya king)

Person: Rajaraja I (Chola king)
Date: 947 (crown moved), 985 (Rajaraja I accession), 993 (Anuradhapura campaign)
Location: Anuradhapura, Lanka
- 947: Pandya king Rajasimha fled with the royal regalia and placed the crown in Anuradhapura.
- Parantaka I launched immediate punitive crossings after the Pandya collapse but returned each time without occupying Lanka.
- For forty-six years Chola operations were raids that "stopped short," taking loot then withdrawing across the Palk Strait.
- By 985 Rajaraja I inherited an unresolved claim and a weakening Sinhalese court with internal mutinies and unrest.
- 993: Rajaraja sent an army instructed to hold territory, and inscriptions name Anuradhapura among his conquests. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 14-day free trial at obomedia.com.
