This ruling is based on the assertion that Trump is disqualified from serving as president again due to his involvement in the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The court's decision hinged on an interpretation of the 14th Amendment's "insurrection clause," which forbids anyone who has engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the U.S. Constitution from holding public office.
The ruling was made by a 4-3 majority of the court, which consists entirely of Democratic appointees. It overturns an earlier decision by a Denver judge, which while acknowledging Trump's engagement in insurrection, left him eligible to remain on the ballot due to constitutional ambiguities.
