Compline Service:
First night of Advent
'In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.' (Psalm 4:8)" Leader: O Lord, open our lips.
All: And our mouth shall proclaim your promise. Leader: O God, make speed to save us.
All: O Lord, make haste to come among us. Leader: Glory be to the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier, The one God, who was, who is, and who is to come,
All: The Light of the world, our Emmanuel. Leader: Come, Lord Jesus.
All: Come quickly, and bring us your peace. On this first night of Advent, we embark on a journey of anticipation.
Opening Prayer
May our hearts be open to the whispers of angels,
guiding us through the darkness
with the promise of Emmanuel, God with us.
Let us walk together in faith,
preparing our hearts for the joy that is to come.
Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 (Prophecy of the Messiah)
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
Psalm 27:1, 13-14
The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.
The Nunc Dimitis (Song of Simeon) Lord, you have kept your promise:
now let your servant go in peace.
With my own eyes, I have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared for all people to see.
He is a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.
Intercessions Let us pray for the Church, the world, and all who long for the coming of Christ, saying Come, Lord Jesus, and bring your hope to the world. Gracious God, in this season of waiting, renew our hope in you.
Strengthen your Church to proclaim the good news of your salvation,
and let your light shine in the darkness.
All: Come, Lord Jesus, and bring your hope to the world. Prince of Peace, quiet the turmoil in our hearts and in the world.
Bring healing to nations at war, reconciliation to divided communities,
and peace to all who live in fear.
All: Come, Lord Jesus, and bring your peace to the world.
Lord of joy, as we prepare to celebrate your birth, fill our hearts with gladness.
Comfort the sorrowful, lift the weary, and help us to share your joy with others.
All: Come, Lord Jesus, and bring your joy to the world.
Emmanuel, God with us, be near to the sick especially those commended to our prayers.........
we pray too for the lonely, and the hurting.
Strengthen the hands that care for them, and bring healing to all in need.
All: Come, Lord Jesus, and bring your presence to the brokenhearted.
God of the promise, as we wait for the coming of your Son,
give us patience, courage, and faith to trust in your perfect timing.
Prepare our hearts to welcome him with joy.
All: Come, Lord Jesus, and fulfill your promises.
O God, you hear the cries of your people.
May our prayers rise to you like incense,
and may your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
All: Amen.
The Lord's Prayer
And now as our saviour Christ has commanded, let us pray
Our Father who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
