17 NOV 2022 · Few are surprised that many Kiwis want the fuel tax cut to be extended. A new poll states that more than two-thirds of respondents want the current fuel tax cut extended until annual inflation is below 3 per cent. In the 12 months to September 2022 inflation was at 7.2 per cent. On current forecasts that would mean extending the cut until the middle of 2024, costing more than $2 billion. 17 NOV 2022 · An employers group says it's been forced to play a part in the Government's new Fair Pay Agreements system. The Government had offered the lobby group funding to act on behalf of employers that need representation and play a supporting role in the system more generally. But BusinessNZ says it wanted nothing to do with the scheme, partly due to its compulsory nature. Advocacy Director Catherine Beard told Mike Hosking the organisation has now accepted it will represent some members in some negotiations, on a case-by-base basis. She says the Fair Pay Agreement system is the law, and businesses and industry groups will have to follow it. The system comes into effect next month. LISTEN ABOVE  

17 NOV 2022 · The Reserve Bank is set to meet next week, and speculation suggests rates may be hiked again. Liam Dann, NZ Herald business editor at large is among the many who assumes a 75 basis points hike is looking likely. Liam Dann notes that this basis points hike is high, and that it could put the OCR at a level we haven't seen since the global financial crisis. Even the less likely 50 percent basis points hike will hit the economy hard. LISTEN ABOVE  

16 NOV 2022 · After two years of stunted growth our local economies could be doing better than we realise. With international tourism boosting activity over the winter season, the South Island and Auckland saw some of the strongest economic gains over the last year, specifically in the September 2022 quarter. However, questions remain over how New Zealand will find the resources to support a strong summer of tourism with our current workforce and capacity challenges remains. 16 NOV 2022 · A glimmer of hope is in sight for split migrant families. It's believed the Government is creating a priority pathway for family members stuck overseas. The issue was meant to be fixed by the Covid R21 visa, which replaced the family reunification border exemption, but instead left many waiting months in limbo. Immigration adviser David Cooper told Mike Hosking most of the holdup has been down to police checks and national security checks, both out of the hands of immigration. He says the best way forward is to identify those affected and issue their families with temporary visas, with residency occurring later. LISTEN ABOVE  

16 NOV 2022 · Belief businesses aren't out of the woods yet, despite economic activity increasing in the September quarter Infometrics data shows a 2.6 percent year-on-year rise, driven by stronger tourism and household spending. Auckland and South Island areas have seen some of the strongest gains. Tourism Export Council Chief Executive Lynda Keene told Kate Hawkesby Australian visitors through the winter months have played a key role. She says the results are encouraging, but they won't be too excited until October's results are released, as that's when the season officially begins. LISTEN ABOVE  

16 NOV 2022 · Hopes a major international retailer moving to Lambton Quay will give a post-pandemic boost to Wellington's CBD. Clothing brand Calvin Klein has confirmed it will set up shop in part of the building that once housed Kirkcaldie and Stains, and more recently David Jones. It shut down in June. First Retail Group Managing Director Chris Wilkinson says it's great news for the capital. He says having the acknowledgement of an international brand is a great first step in enlivening the area again. Other tenants for the rest of the building's space haven't yet been announced. 16 NOV 2022 · According to new data from KPMG, New Zealand is underperfoming in sustainability reporting. The KPMG report ranked New Zealand 38th out of 58 eligible countries in our environmental, social, and governance reporting, which puts us below the pack in terms of trading partners. KPMG NZ partner Ian Proudfoot says getting our reporting standards up is important, as talented workers want to attach themselves to companies that give them purposeful work.  Ian Proudfoot also states Investors and consumers will want to connect with companies that can deliver positive contributions, and improved sustainability reporting is a better look for both domestic and international clients. 15 NOV 2022 · The Government plans to repeal the ailing RMA for new legislation by the next election. It will eventually slash and merge the 100-plus plans produced under the RMA, to just 15. The transition is expected to take roughly 10 years and is expected to cut costs to users by almost $150 million a year, as well as shorten the time to get a building consent.
