By the 1980s, a global box office business emerged and a military-cinema-industrial complex was established. Join us as we examine how political factors and social movements of the next five decades impacted the trends of Asian American representation. From Crazy Rich Asians to Parasite to Chloe Zhao's most recent Oscar win, it feels like watershed moment for Asian representation in Hollywood. But, this success didn't come out of nowhere. Join us as we look back at the most successful Asian American entertainers of the 19th and 20th century, and attempt to answer the question: When did Asian American cinema really begin?
