In the heart of ancient Egypt, Ledscha finds herself adrift after the loss of her betrothed, her spirit crushed and hope for love extinguished. Yet, the gods have a different fate in store for her. She falls for a Greek sculptor, who initially desires her only as a model—but destiny has other plans. Just as her dreams begin to rekindle, she discovers that another woman has taken her place in the creation of a statue dedicated to Arachne. Who will the gods choose for her? Is it the sculptor, or will her true path lead her elsewhere? This captivating tale is the final work penned in German by Georg Ebers, a prolific author whose novels ignited a fervent interest in Egyptology before his passing in 1898. The book was also translated into English in the same year. (Summary by Ann Boulais)
