Joseph Conrad, born in what is now Poland and exiled in Russia due to his fathers Polish nationalist ideals, faced immense challenges in his early life, including learning French before speaking English in his late teens. It’s no wonder that his debut novel, Almayers Folly, delves into the complexities of identity and the struggle to define oneself amid conflict and confusion. The story follows Almayer, a despondent Dutch trader living in squalor on a Bornean river, who dreams of striking it rich and bringing his mixed-race daughter, Nina, to the Netherlands, a place unfamiliar to both. However, Nina and her determined Filipina mother have their own loyalties and aspirations, leading to a clash of dreams that unravels in unexpected ways. (Summary by Peter Dann)
