A Ball Player’s Career is the candid autobiography of Adrian C. “Cap” Anson, one of professional baseball’s earliest stars and longest-serving player-managers. Writing at the dawn of the twentieth century, Anson recounts his upbringing in Iowa, his entry into organized baseball, and the decades he spent helping transform a loosely structured pastime into a national professional sport.
The memoir follows his years with Rockford, Philadelphia, and especially Chicago, where he became captain, first baseman, manager, and one of the era’s most successful hitters. Alongside accounts of pennant races and famous players, Anson recalls clubhouse life, evolving rules, managerial strategies, international tours, and the challenging conditions faced by nineteenth-century teams.
The book is also a revealing historical document whose attitudes reflect its period. Anson’s outspoken support for racial segregation remains a serious and inseparable part of his legacy and baseball’s early history.
Combining personal anecdotes with firsthand observations of the sport’s formative years, this audiobook offers valuable insight for listeners interested in baseball history, sporting memoirs, and the complicated figures who shaped America’s national pastime.
