You know that Neil Young song Old Man? Listening to this pod made me think of it, in an inverse sorta way. Winter of '74 I was in my 3rd quarter at LTU, sleeping in the back of my GTO, usually parked in a graveyard for privacy, while waiting on dad's travel trailer to be available. I was 18, trying to figure out how to reconcile conflicting desires, one to do the school thing, become an engineer, "retire" at 35, then do what pleased me most - spend time away from the world of people, wherever that might be. Another was to skip the school part, "retire" early, worry about being old when (if) I got there. After flip-flopping a few years I fell into the latter fulltime. The best things happened when I had the least firm idea of what to do and jumped at opportunities w/o overthinking them. I saw Richie Havens at the Northern Folkies Rock Festival one summer, he sang 'Death At An Early Age' that resonated, especially the line "makin' mistakes was my usual way"
