Parenting is one of the most beautiful and challenging callings we can have. Discipline is often one of the hardest parts of that calling—but it’s also one of the most powerful tools for discipleship. Hebrews 12 reminds us that God Himself disciplines those He loves. His correction is not punishment, but training—designed to shape our hearts toward righteousness and peace. When we view discipline through the lens of discipleship, our goal shifts from controlling behavior to shaping character. Think about Eli and his sons in 1 Samuel 2. Eli’s failure to correct his sons led to their downfall and dishonor before God. In contrast, God’s discipline of David after his sin with Bathsheba, though painful, produced repentance, humility, and deeper intimacy with the Lord. As parents, our correction should reflect God’s heart—firm but compassionate, guiding our children toward truth, repentance, and restoration. Discipline is not rejection; it’s redirection. It’s teaching our children that sin has consequences but grace brings transformation.
