On July 25, 1965, one of the most iconic moments in sports history took place during the Tour de France. French cyclist Raymond Poulidor and Italian cyclist Felice Gimondi were battling it out on the slopes of Mount Ventoux, one of the most grueling climbs in the race.

As the two riders neared the summit, they were both exhausted and struggling to maintain their pace. Suddenly, a spectator stepped out from the crowd and gave Poulidor a gentle push, helping him to keep going. The push was caught on camera and quickly became one of the most famous images in cycling history.

Poulidor went on to win the stage, but Gimondi ultimately won the overall Tour de France that year. The moment on Mount Ventoux, however, has endured as a symbol of the incredible determination and sportsmanship that define the Tour de France.

The image of the spectator helping Poulidor has been reproduced countless times in the years since, and it remains one of the most iconic photographs in sports history. It captures the essence of the Tour de France – the incredible physical and mental challenges that the riders face, and the passionate support of the fans who line the roads to cheer them on.

Poulidor himself became a beloved figure in French cycling, even though he never won the Tour de France. He finished second three times and third five times, earning him the nickname "The Eternal Second." His rivalry with Jacques Anquetil, who won the Tour five times, was the stuff of legend.

The moment on Mount Ventoux in 1965 was a defining one for Poulidor, and for the Tour de France as a whole. It showed the world the incredible drama and emotion that make the race so special, and it cemented Poulidor's place in cycling history as one of the sport's most iconic figures.
