On July 24th in sports history, one significant event took place in 1983 when the legendary baseball player George Brett of the Kansas City Royals had a game for the ages against the New York Yankees.

In a heated contest at Yankee Stadium, Brett came to the plate in the top of the ninth inning with his team trailing 4-3. With two outs and a runner on first, Brett hit a towering two-run home run off Yankees closer Goose Gossage, giving the Royals a 5-4 lead.

However, the drama didn't end there. Yankees manager Billy Martin, known for his fiery temper and gamesmanship, charged out of the dugout and claimed that Brett's bat had too much pine tar on it, exceeding the allowed limit of 18 inches from the handle. The umpires conferred and ultimately agreed with Martin, nullifying Brett's home run and calling him out, which ended the game with a Yankees victory.
