The Pokémon franchise is entering a new era with the announcement of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, the first mainline entries developed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. Revealed during a special presentation celebrating the series' 30th anniversary, these titles are scheduled for release in 2027.
Building on the foundation of recent entries, these games feature a fully explorable open world. The setting is a new region composed of multiple islands separated by vast stretches of ocean. This geographical focus on the balance between land and sea serves as a nod to the gameplay mechanics found in the classic third-generation games, Ruby and Sapphire. By moving to more powerful hardware, the developers aim to deliver a high-performance experience that overcomes the technical limitations of previous console generations.
A central highlight of the announcement is the introduction of three new starter Pokémon, which players will choose from at the beginning of their journey:

• Browt (Grass-type): A chickadee Pokémon with a distinct, bulbous head.
• Gecqua (Water-type): A quadrupedal gecko characterized by its "cool" and composed attitude.
• Pombon (Fire-type): A cute orange puppy featuring a large mane that covers much of its body.

The new region will also be home to a variety of returning favorites. Pokémon such as Pikachu, Tympole, Wailord, Tropius, and Frillish have been confirmed to appear. The game emphasizes ecological immersion, placing these creatures in environments that suit their traits; for instance, players can encounter Slugma in volcanic caves, Carnivine in marshy areas, and Lumineon in underwater coves.
Beyond these mainline titles, the franchise is expanding with several other projects. Pokémon Legends: Z-A recently introduced a revamped battling system that moves away from traditional turn-based mechanics. For players seeking a more relaxed experience, the upcoming Pokémon Pokopia will offer "cozy" gameplay similar to life-simulation titles. Additionally, a competitive-focused game called Pokémon Champions is expected to arrive on consoles and mobile devices later this year, providing fans with various ways to engage with the world of Pokémon leading up to the 2027 launch of Winds and Waves.
