My guest, civil attorney Phil Elberg believes to understand what happened at the troubled teens program Kids of North Jersey, you have to understand it was a cult. Its founder and director, Miller Newton "a real deal cult leader". Elberg should know as he spent a large portion of his career fighting and winning multimillion dollar judgements for those harmed in Kids of North Jersey. How did it he do it? He just told his client's story and never used the word cult.
The most famous of Elberg's cases is the Lulu Corter case. Corter was admitted into the program at age thirteen despite having no behavior, drug or alcohol problems. She escaped out of the program at age twenty six. Corter intially contacted Elberg to ask him where she should tell her story. She ended up telling her story on the witness stand in court. The case was settled for 6.5 million dollars.
