The St. Clair Lights In March 1973, Dr. Harley D. Rutledge, Ph.D. initiated Project Identification, a multi-year observational experiment to bring science and technology to bear on the multitude of UFO reports coming from Southeast Missouri, both before and after the famous mass sighting in Piedmont Missouri. This presentation draws parallels between the observations and conclusions of Project Identification and the observations of present-day MUFON Field Investigators in response to multiple sightings reported in the area of St. Clair Missouri. Employing 21st century technology and all the principals of good old fashioned field work, MUFON continues a long heritage of truth-finding by replicating Dr. Rutledge’s findings, and much more. Mel Van Vickle has served as a MUFON Field Investigator and a member of MUFON’s Photo Analysis Team since November 2019 and as the Chief Investigator for the state of Missouri since January 2022. Born in Saint Joseph Missouri, he graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. He then began his career with the Defense Mapping Agency Aerospace Center (DMAAC) in Saint Louis Missouri as a DoD Civilian Cartographer, doing mapping projects in support of the US Air Force. With the advent of digital imaging satellites, DMAAC went through a series of changes to become the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). Mel received post-graduate training in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing from the University of Ohio. His career shifted to geospatial technologies, where he was a computer programmer, a systems administrator, a telecommunications engineer, finally a computer systems and software engineer. Mel retired from NGA as a Senior Systems Engineer in 2012 after 33 years with DoD. This is a presentation by the MUFON Central Region and it is open to everyone. We do monthly and periodic videos of presentations about UFOs. To join MUFON, visit www.mufon.com.
