Fentanyl production in Mexico has been a significant concern in recent years due to its role in the global opioid crisis. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that is estimated to be up to 100 times stronger than morphine. It is primarily produced for medical use as a painkiller, but illicitly manufactured fentanyl has become a major problem.Mexican drug cartels have been increasingly involved in the production and trafficking of fentanyl. They have taken advantage of the high demand for opioids in the United States and other countries, where fentanyl-related overdose deaths have surged.

The production of fentanyl involves the synthesis of precursor chemicals, mainly originating from China, and the cartels have established clandestine laboratories to manufacture the drug. These laboratories are often located in remote areas of Mexico, such as the states of Sinaloa, Michoacán, and Guerrero. The cartels have been able to produce fentanyl in large quantities, primarily in powder or pill form. They often mix fentanyl with other substances, such as heroin or counterfeit prescription drugs like oxycodone, to increase its potency and profitability.

The production process itself is hazardous and involves the handling of toxic chemicals, making it a risky endeavor. However, the high profits associated with fentanyl production have attracted criminal organizations despite the risks. Mexican authorities, along with international partners like the United States, have been working to disrupt fentanyl production and dismantle the cartels involved.Efforts to combat fentanyl production in Mexico include increased law enforcement cooperation, intelligence sharing, and targeting the precursor chemicals used in its synthesis. However, the illicit fentanyl trade remains a complex challenge due to the involvement of powerful and well-organized criminal networks.

As Mexico cracks down on fentanyl and the labs where it's being produced, Mexican cartels, namely the Sinaloa cartel, have begun a pilot program where they are setting up shop in high end neighborhoods in Colombia and turning those apartments or homes into mini fentanyl factories capable of producing up to 100k pills per day.
