We close out Spanish-Language Film Month with the true story of Ramón Sampedro, a quadriplegic who fought for almost thirty years for the right to end his own life. Alejandro Amenábar's The Sea Inside (Mar adentro) stars Javier Bardem as Sampedro, tracing his life from the diving accident that took his body to his legal fight and his final moments, and telling it in an unsentimental way that sits at odds with the usual American biopic. It's a quiet film that asks hard questions about life, death, and what it means to be human. We talk euthanasia, Bardem's body of work, and why these kinds of movies don't necessarily move the needle for us.
Rankin on Bass's Richard Hatem joins Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, to talk Amenábar, Javier Bardem, the right to die, and so much more.
