The darkest day in Colorado was also this state's dirtiest secret for many, many years. The atrocities and violence that were perpetrated against innocent men, women, and children were covered up to save face for many of our state's historic leaders. In this episode, we are going to take a long look at the dark side of humanity and uncover the truth behind the Massacre at Sand Creek.

For Jeff— A freind of mine metal detected the Hungate site in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He found additional guns and cartridges that make your surmization incorrect. Also, assuming evidence based upon a modern trait of temperament is irresponsible. Additionally, Chivington is more complicated than just being “evil”. He was an abolitionist who assisted John Brown’s sons as a Jayhawker, against slavery. He was also a Civil War hero whom started in the battle of Glorietta Pass in which his tact stopped the confederates from staking the Colorado gold fields for Confrderate use. He also had an experience in which a Utes had kidnapped a member of his family. This is not in defense of his horrid actions at Sand Creek, but, it gives some insight III to the mind of why such evil brewed. Essentially, white men came in to a Native area and staked claim and Natives defended their land. Sadly, in the end, the victors were those with more advanced weaponery.
