A neutron star compresses more mass than the Sun into a sphere roughly the size of a city.
But calling it a ball of neutrons hides the real mystery.
Deep inside, matter is pushed beyond anything we can reproduce in a laboratory. Atomic nuclei disappear as familiar structures. Particles are forced into extraordinary densities. And somewhere beneath the crust, physicists are no longer certain what matter actually becomes.
Does the core remain dominated by neutrons?
Do new particles appear?
Do protons and neutrons themselves dissolve into quark matter?
In this episode of Where Physics Ends, we enter the densest observable matter in the universe and ask a surprisingly difficult question.
What is a neutron star actually made of?
