The Hat has made up its mind about every student for a thousand years. Tonight, for one transfer student carrying a shard that should not exist, it stalls.

Ellis Thorne sits on the stool in front of the whole Hall while the Sorting Hat argues with itself — and whatever answers back is not a House. Inside: the walk to the stool, the long silence under the brim, and the Hufflepuff table's reaction when the verdict finally lands. About twenty-one minutes, first-person, wand out.
