It’s perestroika time, Comrades - I mean, Slackers!
This week is all about Russia, Russia, Russia, fka the USSR. For most of our childhoods, the USSR was the “big bad” that made us duck & cover and worry about mutually assured nuclear destruction. The bad guys in so many action flicks of the 80s were communists, terrorists, or any combination thereof. Not to mention the fact that the movie War Games was more fact than fiction - did you know that computer programming errors almost caused nuclear strikes on more than one occasion?
The sobering part about reviewing the history of the Cold War is how many things that were happening in international relations have had long lasting impacts that continue today. Vietnam. Iran-Contra. The funding of the mujahideen in Afghanistan. It’s easy to see in hindsight how many decisions made at the time would yield horrible results in the years and decades to come.
So let’s jump into our MiG fighters and take a journey through the Cold War from 1975 - 1989.
