She was a respected businesswoman, a successful entrepreneur, a community favorite, and even had a day named after her. Then investigators uncovered a financial empire built on an alleged four hundred million dollar Ponzi scheme. Gina Champion Kain had built a powerful reputation in San Diego. She owned businesses, invested in real estate, appeared in local media, and even ran for mayor. But after purchasing a restaurant in twenty eleven, Gina claimed she had discovered a lucrative business opportunity involving California liquor licenses. She created a company that supposedly loaned money to bars and restaurants seeking liquor licenses. Investors loved the idea and millions of dollars began pouring in. But there was a problem. The supposed customers were almost nowhere to be found. As investigators dug deeper, they discovered allegations of fake documents, fabricated communications, money being moved into struggling businesses, luxury personal spending, and older investors allegedly being paid with money from newer investors. Then, in twenty nineteen, a private equity firm considered investing one hundred million dollars into Gina’s company. One consultant decided to investigate. What he discovered changed everything. From community hero to suspected financial criminal, Gina’s carefully constructed empire began collapsing.
