On this week’s podcast we have special guest Sarah Wolfer, CEO of Girl Boss Sports, and plays womens professional football. We discuss how sports can teach us about leadership and teamwork, and the importance of encouraging and coaching young women to be leaders. I share a glass of Purple Haze Raspberry Lager from Abita Brewing Company in Covington, LA.

Sarah started Girl Boss Sports because she is passionate about women supporting women, leadership, and the many benefits of sports – and at Girl Boss Sports she was able to combine all three! She has been a soccer coach for 16 years now and has consistently found a lack of female coaches no matter the geographic region where she has coached. Research shows that this is not just an issue in the sport of soccer, but across most others as well! This is an area Girl Boss Sports makes a difference in through recruiting passionate female coaches and athletes and providing training and ongoing development for all Girl Boss Sports coaching staff.
Sarah has also found that every time she coach a girl’s team, she is able to connect on a deeper level with the athletes as she understands the unique experience it is to be a female athlete growing into a young woman. It is this knowledge and experience that she is excited to share with other female coaches and athletes through the reach of Girl Boss Sports. Sarah is also a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) which has given her knowledge around learning theories, child development, and mental health that have increased her skills in the coaching realm as well.

As a current professional athlete herself (and former semi-professional soccer player), Sarah is able to relate to the athletes she works with on a different level.

All of this combined with her 26 years of experience playing the beautiful sport of soccer have led her to where she is today – making an impact on the world by changing the life of one girl at a time.

About Girl Boss Sports:

They have 2 guiding values at Girl Boss Sports that determine everything they do:

1 – Keeping girls in sports by providing them with a quality sports experience and female role-models who know how to succeed as female athletes and in life.
- By the age of 14, girls are twice as likely to drop out of sports
- By the age of 17, half of all girls who play sports have dropped out
- Yet, 96% of female C-Suite Executives report playing sports as a teenager, and over half played at the University level – proving the many benefits of sports for success later in life

2 – Improving the pipeline of female sports coaches as there are way too few of them. This is something they are working to disrupt in the sports industry because:
- Here in the US only 28% of youth sports coaches are women
- For soccer, the number is only 21%
- The higher up in administrations you go, the fewer women there are in senior level positions – for example only 20 percent of NCAA Athletic Directors are female.
