Bharathiraja's Sigappu Rojakkal is a perverse romance: Kamal Haasan plays a quiet, sharply dressed man who courts Sridevi's sheltered young woman, and the film lets you know early that he is a killer. Shot in a near-verite style with a few striking flourishes, it borrows its ending from Psycho and helped usher in the Tamil psycho-killer film. It caps a run of Kamal Haasan pictures on the show, and the question is what makes his understated menace work.
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Mike White (The Projection Booth) talk shaky English subtitles, the mirror shot in the sari shop, why the killer had to be a Norman Bates and not a Patrick Bateman, bell-bottoms and late-seventies menswear, the Hindi remake and a sequel floated decades later, and which American actor matches Kamal Haasan's quiet intensity.
