He had an experimental surgery in the ‘90s that involved extensive reconstruction of his stomach, pancreas, liver, and other organs. This diagnosis of ganglion tumors landed him as a case study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Told he would not live through the surgery; one doctor (Oncologist Dr. Frank) believed he could save him.
